Former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani has decided not to run for governor of New York next year after months of mulling a candidacy, according to people who have been told of the decision. .. It remains unclear whether the former mayor is considering any other political race in 2010. Some have urged him to take on the newly installed Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand, who has never run statewide and is still introducing herself to voters in parts of the state.
The decision will be a boon to other Republican contenders. So far, Rick Lazio, a former congressman from Long Island, is the only declared candidate on the Republican side.

Anyway, Guliani for Senate is now more likely scenario. He would have a decent chance. I would take Rudy over Gillibran anyday. GOP needs a top-class Senate candidate in NY (who has actual chance of winning) and Rudy would probably be the best candidate GOP can have in this area.
Paterson's problem is Andrew Cuomo, not any Republican.
I cannot bear another cuomo as governor......I might just have to move to PA, er...maybe NJ.

Rick Lazio was a total dud. As I recall, he brought in McCain’s campaign managers for his run against Hillary, and she managed to totally destroy him even though she refused to give the news media any interviews, and wouldn’t let the public within 200 yards of her.
i cant wait to leave NYS. if rudy is the best we can do, we’re in trouble. he’s a loser.
Lazio will get shellacked in a governors race.
Rudy would be a good governor for NY. He’s got ehough political clout to take on Speaker Sheldon Silver and win.
NY will not get any better until Sheldon Silver is out as speaker.
Rudy wasn’t born yesterday. He sees the writing on the wall.
Becoming Governor of CA, NY or MI is just setting yourself up for failure, as those ships have already taken on too much water to be bailed-out. Why give them the satisfaction of having a Republican at the helm to take the blame?
I never liked the guy, but his strength was always in his executive capabilities -- and he'd never be happy being one of 100 legislators in a body of mediocrities like the U.S. Senate.
New Jersey had a similar case with Jon Corzine. I never understood why a former Goldman Sachs executive would ever want to take a position in the U.S. Senate. He didn't even finish one term in the Senate -- and left after 4 or 5 years to run for governor.
OH... WHAT A LOSS! /s
My son and I came to that same conclusion as soon as we heard the announcement.
Giuliani will have to do 1/3 the work as Senator. Lots so time off you don’t get as Governor. I don’t think he wants the Governor headache right now
