Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani has decided not to run for governor next year - but will run for U.S. Senate instead, sources told the Daily News.
A source familiar with Giuliani's thinking said the failed presidential candidate has been telling people he plans to run against Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in 2010 to fill out the remaining two years of Hillary Clinton's term.
If elected, the source said, he could use that as a stepping stone to run for President in 2012 - rather than run for re-election to the Senate.
A Giuliani spokeswoman downplayed the reports. "Rudy has a history of making up his own mind and has no problem speaking it," she said. "When Mayor Giuliani makes a decision about serving in public office, he will inform New Yorkers on his own."
His absence from the governor's race would be a boon -- and a bow -- to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who is considering a run for the office.
Gov. Paterson, who trails Cuomo by up to points in a hypothetical matchup in some polls, insists he is running, even though the White House has pointedly told him President Obama would "prefer" he didn't.
Former Staten Island Borough President Guy Molinari, a close Giuliani pal, said the former mayor had been privately sharing doubts with him for months about running for governor.

Guiliani is someone about whom I find so much to dislike, and yet so much to like as well. On the one hand I wish him well in the race, but I’m also glad I don’t have to vote for him.
wow, you would vote for gillyDEMbrand over rudy? pataki isn’t much of a conservative either.
Oh great, now you’ve done it! Don’t give anyone any ideas.
He’d be a vote against healthcare, against cap and trade, and against Obama’s judges. He won’t be Jim DeMint, but give me a break.....do you expect to elect fire-breathing conservatives in New York in this day and age? Any conservative who would rather have Kirsten Gillibrand in the senate over Rudy is delusional.
You don’t have a choice between purity here - it’s Gillibrand or Giuliani.
He will win!....
Which party?
I like Rudy, but let's face it: he peaked fifteen years ago when he got the scum off the streets of New York City, and it's been mostly downhill from there.
The always reliable sources. I’ll only believe it when he makes the announcement.
Rudy would of made a much better governor..
Pataki should of ran for Senate.. This is a BAD MOVE...
Kirsten will suddenly step down to "spend more time with her family" and Hillary! will take her place. NO WAY the Demons will let that seat be lost.
Rudy must feel he won’t be able to beat Cuomo. I would rather see Rudy be NY Governor. That is, if he’s up to the task, and maybe he isn’t (getting older and all) ?
I meant that Spano lost. Nassau county voted in the Republicans because of a tax revolt. If the Republicans just
go back to feeding at the trough, they will be kicked out next time!
g
I think I’d agree, he would be pretty good there. Nice counterbalance to Hillary and some others.
Hope Goober Graham isn’t one of his Senate buddies. Maybe Inhofe or Coburn.
Rudy could’ve won in 2000. Lazio’s probably a decent enough guy, but there was too much of a wimp factor at work and he could never get traction against the Hilldabeast.
He’s got my vote!!! Oops, I vote in Florida. Okay then... he’ll get some of my money if I have any left in 2010.
I would love to see Rudy take out Gillibrand. And if we could take out Dodd and Toomy won in PA, we could all breath a little easier. Even better if we could take Reid’s seat.
If a liberal is going to occupy that seat it might as well be Rudy.
LOL! :-)
Sean Hannity better interview him quickly so he can take credit for Rudy’s victory.
