Trying to rain on Jolly St.Nick?

The United States Post Office will not be forwarding letters to Santa at the North Pole this year. Other programs and private efforts go on, but some are questioning why the USPS is unwilling to forward letters to the North Poll where volunteers – not employees – respond to the kids with letters including sought-after North Pole postmarks on the letter.

We never sent letters to the North Pole.
We wrote them and then had the magic smoke from the fireplace deliver them.

Cheaper than a stamp.

My wife tells me he is Canadian, anyway. In fact, his postal code is H0 H0 H0.

If you mail the letters to Canada with that code, you should get a response.

Yeh, but we always had Mom and Dad check them for spelling errors before we sent them. :^)

Sounds to me like a golden opportunity for Fedex or UPS to step-up and guarantee letters to Santa get delivered.

Who cares about the Post Office anyway? They are a failure.
Your kids can write to Santa and you can make the envelopes FROM Santa look like they are legitimate stamps etc...you don’t need anyone else to make your kids letters to Santa count.

Very cute and sweet tradition. We just wrote ours. Our parents “mailed” them for us and we always received a “response from Santa.” Why is this so hard? We dont’ need the post office.

“Sounds to me like a golden opportunity for Fedex or UPS to step-up and guarantee letters to Santa get delivered.”

Unfortunately, private delivery of first class mail is flagrantly illegal and either company would risk massive fines or imprisonment if they tried this stunt. Congress knows full well that if it allowed head-to-head competition for such mail, the USPS would have annual losses measured in tens of billions of dollars instead of only a few billion.

Reminds me:
I have only one firm belief about the American political system, and that is this: God is a Republican and Santa Claus is a Democrat.

God is an elderly or, at any rate, middle aged male, a stern fellow, patriarchal rather than paternal and a great believer in rules and regulations. He holds men accountable for their actions. He has little apparent concern for the material well being of the disadvantaged. He is politically connected, socially powerful and holds the mortgage on literally everything in the world. God is difficult. God is unsentimental. It is very hard to get into God's heavenly country club.

Santa Claus is another matter. He's cute. He's nonthreatening. He's always cheerful. And he loves animals. He may know who's been naughty and who's been nice, but he never does anything about it. He gives everyone everything they want without the thought of quid pro quo. He works hard for charities, and he's famously generous to the poor. Santa Claus is preferable to God in every way but one: There is no such thing as Santa Claus.

Ah, you see that's the beauty of it. Unlike "Miracle on 34th St", these letters will *not* get delivered to some guy named Santa. They will go to some volunteers to be answered.
