Reading between the lines of Palin's itinerary ["Going Rogue" Book Tour]
The Washington Post ^ | November 23, 2009 | Chris Cillizza

With so much attention being paid to Sarah Palin's book tour, the Fix decided to put our political nerd cap on -- okay, fine, we always wear it -- and go inside the numbers of where she's stopping and why.

All told, the former Alaska governor is making 31 stops in 25 states. Florida will see the most of Palin (three stops), and she will make two appearances each in Texas, Ohio, Indiana and Idaho.

Palin will not stop in the most populous state -- California -- or in another biggie, Illinois. She is sticking largely to Republican-friendly areas, as is clear if you look at how the counties she's visiting voted in the 2008 presidential election.

Of the 31 counties, just 11 were carried by President Obama. Obama's best performance in a "Going Rogue" county came in Hennepin County (Minneapolis), where he won 64 percent of the vote; he took 59 percent in Franklin County (Columbus, Ohio), Cumberland County (Fort Bragg, N.C.) and Orange County (Orlando).

The remainder of the counties in which the Palin road show will stop range from leaning Republican -- Allen County (Fort Wayne, Ind.), where Palin stopped last week, went for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) with 52 percent -- to strongly favoring the GOP. In five of the counties -- Kootenai (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho), Chaves (Roswell, N.M.), Benton (Richland, Wash.), Sumter (The Villages, Fla.) and Roanoke (Roanoke, Va.), 60 percent or more of the voters chose the McCain-Palin ticket.

Of course, from a purely commercial perspective, Palin's focus on Republican-leaning areas makes sense, as it increases the number of books she can sell and the size of the crowds she can draw. (Palin seems to be having little trouble unloading books -- "Going Rogue" sold 300,000 copies on the day it was released.)(continued)

Guest Jack Cashill, guest on KSFO Lee Rogers show this morning claims AP put only 2 fact checkers on the 4000+ page healthcare bill (combined) while employing 11 fact checkers on Sarah Palin’s book of 400+ pages.

Maybe they can tell us again how Sarah Palin was so inexperienced, radical, and so much worse than Biden. Who? Oh yeah, that guy who acts like he has a two pound brain tumor we call the Vice President.

So where did Obama go to sell his books? Considering he was a nobody I suspect political donors bought large quantities and sent them to a recycling center? Surely, there wasn't enough demand for his dribble to make this unknown state senator a millionaire in a normal book market.

No mystery here: she goes to the counties with most book sales.

These days the location of Internet buyers can be shown in real time: definitely enough time to plan an itinerary.

Of the 31 counties, just 11 were carried by President Obama [35%].

For someone who fancies himself a nerd, he should realize that 2/3's of the counties went for McCain, so Sarah's numbers are not out of sync. She is avoing huge cities, big deal. If she gets more people than she can greet in Noblesville, what's the point of going to L.A.?

Uh, Chris, were you paying any attention? Maybe you missed her stop in Chicago last monday? You know, on a little talk show hosted by someone named Oprah Winfrey. I’ve heard it’s fairly popular.

Also, she does have a star on CA on her Going Rogue map, so I wouldn’t rule out something there.

BTW, did anyone ever analyze the stops on Obama’s book tour back in 2006?

The Left’s treatment of Sarah Palin is great example that displays for all honest people just how tolerant, or more exactly intolerant, the self-proclaimed “tolerant” Left is. They think tolerance is something you extend to those whom you agree with! They’re not much more tolerant than Islamists.

I believe the major stops included Tehran, Damascus, Beijing, and Pyongyang.

I’ve been reading about Hillary Clinton’s book signing tour back in 2002. Just prior to the release of her book, Living History, AP snagged a copy, and released some excerpts, no fact checking involved, however. Hillary’s book set a record for non-fiction up to that point, selling 200,000 copies on the first day, including pre-release sales (Palin sold 300,000). Hillary toured 17 cities, NY, Seattle, Chicago, all democratic strongholds, however, no mention of that fact was ever mentioned in any of the articles I’ve read. She drew large crowds everywhere she went, including people who camped out over night (her tour was during the summer), and was often referred to as a “rock star” but in a very positive way, unlike Palin where “rock star” is taken to be a negative. Hillary’s book sold 1 million copies in its first month (I heard yesterday that Palin’s has sold 700,000+ as of Friday), but had dropped to #7 at Amazon before 2 weeks was up. Hillary’s publisher printed an additional 300,000 copies, bringing the total in-print to 1.3 million (Palin’s publisher announced on Fri that they are running an additional 1 million copies, for a total of 2.5 million in-print. Hillary’s book sales were routinely compared favorably to the numbers generated by a Harry Potter book, Palin’s book is sometimes dismissed because it hasn’t sold 8 million copies like the most popular of the Harry Potter books. Hillary’s book was routinely praised, and there was much speculation about whether she’d run for pres or not.

So, it appears that Palin will vastly outdo Hillary Clinton, and may eventually outdo Bill Clinton’s book, which has sold approx 1.5 million compies since it came out in 2004. Hillary’s book has sold approx 1.4 million since its release in 2002. My bet is that Palin’s book will outsell both of them, and maybe even outsell both combined.
