Iraqi troops kill chlorine suicide bomber

SNIPPET: "Iraqi soldiers foiled a potentially deadly suicide attack today at the border crossing at Al Qaim in western Anbar province. From Aswat al-Iraq (Voices of Iraq):

“A force from the 28th infantry division managed to defuse a car bomb and to kill its driver in al-Qaim, Anbar province,” said the statement received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“The suicide driver carries the Kuwaiti nationality, and had on his possession a fake ID issued from Baiji,” the statement added.

“The car was loaded with three tons of Chlorine and C4 as well as other chemical materials,” it added.

Having closely followed Iraq over the years, I am immediately reminded of two incidents from the recent past: al Qaeda's attempt to destroy the Awakening in Anbar with a series of potentially deadly chlorine suicide attacks, and a suicide attack in Mosul by a former Guantanamo Bay detainee who had been turned over to Kuwait in late 2005 and released in mid-2006."

Was it an SUV? What car can carry 3 tons inside? That’s 6k lbs.. Volume-wise, it could carry it, but I would think the weight would be too much for the average car. Isn’t the average passenger car rated for like...2k lbs.? Maybe 3k?

I don’t know bustinchops and I must say, sometimes when foreign news translates, I’ve seen “car” or “automobile” used for the word “vehicle” when in fact the “vehicle” could be a truck, van or suv.

If I see an update; I’ll post it.

I wonder if it was a misunderstanding on the part of a non-technical reporter. There might have been 3 cylinders, each with 2000 psig of CL2.

Dunno, just guessin’.

I’ve been to a lot of chem/bio warfare meetings and the biggest worry is a scenario just like this in our own country. Toxic Industrial Chemicals and Toxic Industrial Materials (TICs and TIMs) are fairly easily purchased or stolen, and just as easily released in most any place in America. This isn’t sensitive information and radical muslims are very much aware of this. Many practice drills use this scenario.

Many years ago, late 1950’s, I was making a large vat of sodium hypochlorite (think bleach) by bubbling chlorine gas from a chlorine gas canister through a solution of sodium hydroxide. It was super stuff, twice the concentration of store bought. We use it for water treatment in commercial cooling systems, and for swimming pool maintenance.

One day a line came off the tank and started filling a rather confined area with chlorine gas. I put a wet cloth over my face and went into the area to turn off the tank. Then cleared the air in the area. Chlorine is pungent, corrosive, and deadly. Not a good experience. Btw, I have no ill effects from my experience.

“ing BS on the details in the article!”

So it didn’t happen? It could easily have been 2000 lbs and that would not make it any less deadly. Perhaps it should read “vehicle” - it could have been something more than a car. On the other hand, not possible to fit a dozen college kids inside a phone booth, not possible to get a who frat house full of kids inside a VW beatle... :)

This system that almost killed me was chlorinating the cooling tower basin that cooled the condensers at a power plant. Oddly, we couldn’t seem to chlorinate enough to kill the algae. We sent a sample to the company’s lab, and they said this algae LIKED chlorine.

Good.

I don’t get the point you’re trying to make, Cindy.

Three tons is 6,000 pounds. A car cannot carry that load.

The point is octex, I quoted from the article.

Like I said previously on the thread, translations to English can have mistakes in them.

It could be mistranslated from the article or someone really sucks at math.

I don’t know.

I posted the article because it’s important to note that CHLORINE is being used in the bombs again.

Thanks for your feedback.

"Calling BS on the details in the article! No way a CAR would be able to carry 6,000 pounds of chlorine, C4 and other items."

Happened all the time in Iraq. The clowns would simply limit the suspension by welding rebar to the springs, for instance. Of course, these vehicles are really hard to drive for any distance.
