How about this. On your 1040 you get to designate where your taxes go. that way liberals can support their favorite welfare schemes, and I get to send 100% of my bucks for a real bang. That way we would see how the people want their taxes spent.....

Yeah, I also had those ups and down both in income during my enlisted time and my time as an officer. With a family we struggled even as a prior enlisted officer up to the time I made major. That was when things finally became “comfortable”. I certainly paid a lot of taxes for most of that time and continue to pay fed, state and local taxes on the retirement pay. The lack of taxes while in the theatre ends up being “made up” as you go up in rank and rotate back. I would never expect them to not tax military pay at all.
