Michelle Obama, once celebrated for her patronage of high street shops accessible to most American women, has raised the fashion stakes by ordering a pair of thigh-high leather boots from France.
The American first lady could give Carla Bruni, the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and a former supermodel, a run for her money once she receives the flat black boots, which have been specially ordered from Robert Clergerie, the French designer based in Romans, in western France.
Mrs Obama has also ordered a pair of calf-length boots in beige buckskin, according to Mr Clergerie, whose boots sell for hundreds of pounds.

Robert Clergerie said the first lady's order had been sent in by a retailer in her hometown Chicago after Mrs Obama could not find the exact style she wanted. One of the pairs was modified slightly from the catalogue model at her request, he said.
With her fashion-forward move, Mrs Obama has kicked aside controversy over the $540 (£362) Lanvin trainers she wore to volunteer at a charity food bank last spring.
Critics were quick to question the appropriateness of wearing such expensive shoes to a charity event for the poor - particularly given the troubled economy.
During her husband's presidential campaign, Mrs Obama was lauded by US women's magazines for sporting affordable cardigans from J.Crew and reasonably priced dresses by Anne Klein.
Clergerie is one of the few remaining great shoemakers in Romans-sur-Isere, a small town in south-west France that has been renowned for its shoes for centuries.
He has previously made footwear for Madonna, Bianca Jagger and Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy.

Michelle Obama is at best a very average looking woman. She either wears a wig or has had her hair straightened. She has an EXTREMELY large butt and is built like a linebacker. Her constant scowl and LARGE feet make her anything but a fashion icon or beauty in anyone's eyes. Give it up Lame stream. People still have eyeballs that function. Your lies wont work on this (except for the brain washed) which you have anyway....so whats the point?

Good luck with that race Michelle. It’s easy to see why Mick Jagger got with Bruni. I can’t imagine him ever getting with Michelle.
The boots with high heels would be far more attractive than the flat things Meeshel is buying. I cannot imagine how hideous she will look in those things — she has really fat knees and covering them will be some trick!
I’m not one to criticize as I don’t have great legs either, but I would never dare to wear boots like that — the ones Meeshel has ordered. Ridiculous!
Class and taste could make up for any physical shortcomings. She has neither.
Meanwhile, French whip couturiers are fervently awaiting her next purchase.
I would refuse to make any comment about Michelle Obama’s looks, IF the media didn’t pretend she was knock down gorgeous. Of course, maybe she DOES knock you down if you don’t call her gorgeous.
As for the French First ‘Lady’ - Carla Bruni was a slut, but she was a darn good looking one! Still is good looking...

Please, please, stop, you are killing me - can’s stop laughing (at work). You just can’t buy this kind of humor. Like taking a race-horse filly and an old glue factory nag (GFN); putting ribbons on the GFN’s mane and calling it, “pretty much the same thing!” They have to be crazy to try and sell this idea.
Exactly. Laura Bush was an attractive woman but not a beauty in the model sense. I would venture to say that most people found her quite pleasant to look at and listen to. She had class and did not have a bit of pettiness in her. She made people at ease. A very likable woman.
