Silverdome sale brings more Detroit-area dismay

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) - Talk about getting stuck with the cheap seats.

The Pontiac Silverdome in suburban Detroit was built three decades ago for $56 million. Now it's being virtually given away after a judge approved its sale for a paltry $583,000.

That comes out to $7.25 a seat as the once-proud arena is relegated to being another sad symbol of the Detroit area's economic collapse.

The Silverdome opened in 1975 as home of the Detroit Lions and housed the NBA's Pistons in 1978-88.

And I have a front-row seat at the demolition of Reunion Arena here in Dallas, which was built in 1980.

That comes out to $7.25 a seat

It also includes over 100 acres of land.

I worked near the Silverdome for a while and the only thing I ever heard going on there for an entire year was one monster truck rally. One. This isn't surprising. Everyone talks about how bad Detroit is doing, but has anyone ever been to Pontiac? It looks even worse.

Pontiac isn’t a great neighborhood. Of course people will go wherever the game is to see the NBA or NFL (or MLB, NHL or NASCAR). That’s a pretty short list. The Pistons have a better stadium purpose built for Basketball. The Lions have a very nice Stadium that is in Detroit.

Realistically there just isn’t much to fill that place. (There are many other large venues in the area that are better for most everything else.)

Many cities just dynamite their old stadiums for this reason. I guess what it says is that the land is cheap. But it always was, that’s why it got built there to start with.

The story about Detroit not being able to afford to bury their dead is a much worse indicator, IMHO.

They can’t even demolish it for that amount.

Agreed, but I hadn't heard that one.

“After reading about the auction in a newspaper, property manager Andreas Apostolopoulos of Toronto decided to submit a bid of US$583,000. After learning that he had submitted the winning bid, which he said was “a bit surprising,” the Canadian made arrangements to visit the Silverdome in late November and take a look at his new property” - Wikipedia

“Now what?” he then said.

I won’t be sad to see it go, one less domed stadium is a good thing.

From the things I hear about Detroit it sounds like whoever bought it paid too much.

I’m surprised some tele-evangelist didn’t see the opportunity to turn it into the “Mother of All Mega-Churches.”

How so? As in who would pay THAT MUCH for ANTHING in Detroit?

Remember. This is a city where you can buy a home for $7500.

As if you’d want to.

The stories I’ve heard about Detroit remind sound too much like Beirut in the 1980’s.

I was browsing craigslist Detroit real estate for curiosity sake. There was a house, nicer than mine, for 15k. It came complete with a lawnmower, snow blower and an inspected, running 1997 Ford Tarus.

The parking lot had a drive-in theater for a few years.
It was great unless you were by the generator that ran the projector.

And, I kid you not, they ran out of gas before the end of the second feature!!!!

Most cities that build a new stadium, build the new one in the parking lot of the old one then implode the old one. BTW, what's goint to happen to Texas Stadium now that the Cowboys no longer play there?

I drove by there the other day, I saw some trucks from the demolition company so it’s only a matter of time.
