The best thing to say to a room full of people is that even though we're in a tough time and a recession, you still go out to eat," Hyland said. "It's discretionary."

To the degree you still go out to eat, you will do it less if it costs more, which it will if they tax it.

Pal? Pal? Trying to speak mobsterese now, are you? Don’t choke on your gold chains or your diamond pinky ring.

FYI I have never worked as a government employee nor as a server in a restaurant. I have been somewhat successfully self-employed for three decades. If you choose to stiff some poor, hard working waiter, you just go ahead and do it. I tip well. And I tip based on service, not to make some dumbass political statement.

However, if you had any reading comprehension skills whatsoever, you would go have seen that my original comment was to the effect that the home-owning and auto-owning citizens of Fairfax County are already well burdened with real estate and until recently with automobile taxes and decals. They don’t need further taxes on those essentials.

Eating out in a restaurant is not an essential. If one is traveling on business, the expenses are deductible, so don’t look for sympathy. Tax on a meal in Fairfax County is 4%; if it were doubled it would match New York’s, and would be only slightly shy of New Jersey’s.

But we are thrilled and delighted that you are taking an interest in the Old Dominion. Virginia’s government being called “profligate” by a Joiseyite is just a hoot. Thanks for the laughs, PAL.

Supervisor Gerald W. Hyland (D-Mount Vernon) is an example of the typical idiotic government worker.

Who knows though - perhaps the big chain restaurants are attempting to pay off the County Supervisors, etc., to eliminate the competition. In which case it’s not stupidity...just sayin’.

Marketshare, marketshare, marketshare. I can’t believe no one even brought up the possibility that this proposal for new taxes could be a scam.

How do you think the local eminent domain cases get decided? It’s called corruption.

What, pray tell, are you posting about?

The tax burden in Fairfax County, in case you didn’t notice, falls hardest on homeowners. I object to that. I object to reinstating decal charges and upping that car tax. So what is wrong with that?

Fairfax County provides no more services than you would have to pay for elsewhere, whether you use them or not. If you don’t have children in school, you still have to pay to have the schools, no matter where you live. That is one-half of the Fairfax County budget. If you don’t commit or fall victim to a crime, you still have to pay for police. If your house doesn’t have a fire you still have to pay for the fire department.

In Fairfax County homeowners still have to pay for such things as trash collection and top dollar for utilities. Why should their real estate taxes be raised, rather than a few more dollars on a restaurant meal?

And I really don’t think I have to establish my conservative bona fides with you or any schmuck from NJ.

I’m so sick of people like this.

Why don’t you cowardly bastards actually CUT something? And I’m not talking essential services. Lay off marginal employees. Freeze salaries and benefits. Make some tough choices instead of slurping at the public trough. And cut benefits in the welfare state. You’re not helping anyone by creating and maintaining dependency classes.

Disgusting.

"He said a meals tax would bring in about as much as a property tax increase of 5 cents per $100 of assessed value and would be spread over a larger group of people."

This really makes me angry. They just raised the property tax here this year. They had the audacity to tell everyone that since their property values had dropped so much that most people would be paying less. Ummm, wait a second. Most people would be paying even less if the losers hadn't RAISED the tax. And now they're considering raising it even more?!?!

I’ll believe in your conservative bona-fides when you stand against an un-necessary tax used to support excess and un-necessary government programs. Those homeowners you so fervently defend keep electing big spenders, and then want taxes that hit non-residents harder ?

If the people of Fairfax County truly want and need all the plethora of services the Fairfax County Government, in their fabled billion-dollar Taj Mahal, then they can bloody well PAY for them. . .

And it’s not like Fairfax is conservative anymore: between the Dems and RINOs like Tom Davis, it’s solid blue, and has turned Loudoun and Prince William distinct shades of purple. . .

Probably because they are non-existent. You tax like a lib, defend it like a lib, but claim to be a conservative.

Put up or shut up. . .
