Two Houston charities that require proof of citizenship or legal residency before registering families for holiday toy drives said Tuesday their intentions have been misunderstood.
Executive Assistant Fire Chief Rick Flanagan said people won't be turned away from a Dec. 23 giveaway even if they can't provide proof of their immigration status.
They ask, Flanagan said of the Outreach Program Inc., which distributes toys collected by the Houston Fire Department. If (people) don't have identification, they still get in. I wouldn't have the program if they didn't.
And the Salvation Army, which asks for a Social Security number when registering children for its gift program, said it does so only to deter fraud.

I for one, would not support a charity that has no controls in place for how the money is spent.
Well...this is one of my pet peeves....I have a hard time giving to ANY group at any time outside of a Church that I know is Bible believing and acting! We need to go BACK to charity from Churches alone!
There are loop holes on how to discriminate. For instance, somebody in WA State dontated 150 cases of sausage to a food bank...you know darn well who won’t take a hand out of pork product.
GENIUS!
My ex-sister-in-law was a social worker that used to work with a lot of inner city families.
I remember she complained that a lot of her families would go “Charity Hopping” from Salvation Army, to Toys for Tots, to their Local Church, to Santa Anomonys and so on, and would end up with $500 of toys for each of their kids.
THAT IS why I ONLY give to a particular Church anymore....
Illegal immigrants do not deserve one iota of any consideration before our own citizens. They made the decision to come here illegally and therefore should shoulder the consequences. Therefore they are ineligble for any consideration or benefit from the US. Legal immigrants who waited their turn and did everything necessary to become a US citizen however should get benefits and consideration. All illegals should not and never get any.
agreed. charity begins at home. their home is in MX.
Ugh!!
One of our employees signed up our company to volunteer at one of those toy giving charities. My sister-in-law’s story has been replaying in my mind again and again. Now I have this to consider as well :(
LOL, there ya go.
I see nothing wrong, though, with wanting people’s charitable donations to go to actual citizens. The illegals are already getting plenty of taxpayers’ charity.
I give to charities but I discriminate. The charities I give to have to pass my own personal smell test. Before giving to any charity even a church, I go online and research that charity to ensure they have, for example, no connection to ACORN or any other ultraliberal affiliation.
Every year, I’ve bought toys for all of those toy drives, even back in my early 20s when my husband and I were really struggling to work our way through college ( I call those years our top ramen soup years). This year however, so many of my nieces and nephews are going to have a really rough Christmas so instead of giving anonymously, I’m sending hundreds of dollars worth to make sure they have more of a Christmas. This is the first year I’ve had to do this, but when push comes to shove, yes....charity really does start at home.
As far as I know, there is no Church that is AGAINST supporting illegals. This is one of the reasons I stay away from the Catholic Church even though it really bothered my parents.
