Yes, I think location has more influence than many think and in more ways too. I remember once, maybe in the early 70’s when there was a Black girl running for homecoming queen at the University of Alabama.
The news media were making a big deal out of whether it would be a Black or White girl. The students fooled them all. They selected a Japanese girl from Dothan, Alabama. My wife used to work with her and she had a strong Southern accent. It really is strange to see a pretty Japanese girl speaking with a strong Southern drawl. As you might guess, her family had been in the area a long time.
