ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Two workers were injured, one seriously, when they slipped and fell from a roof area of Cowboys Stadium while doing maintenance Thursday morning, authorities said.

The two were working on the top hatch of the retractable-roof venue around 7:20 a.m. when they slipped, Assistant Fire Chief Don Crowson said. They were not using “fall protection,” he said.

The workers fell from an upper roof to a lower section, police spokeswoman Tiara Ellis Richard said.

Live TV coverage showed fire department crews on the roof of the nearly $1.2 billion stadium, where the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys began playing this season. Crews used baskets, lines and ladders to lower the workers in a rescue that took about 90 minutes.

Both workers were transported to hospitals. Crowson said one man was severely injured but he had no details.

Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple said workers were on the roof for ongoing maintenance that will continue through the new year. Dalrymple did not know the extent of the injuries and said he was unsure if cold weather was a factor in the fall.

I was in the very upper section of Cowboy Stadium on Thanksgiving Day. We saw the men up at the top and one was laying in a hammock. We thought that was stupid and dumb. This is not Jerry’s fault. This is the stupidity of the workers. Our seats were so far up it was a bit too high for me.

2 workers fall from Cowboys Stadium roof

Two workers slid off the Dallas Cowboys Stadium roof while doing maintenance about 7 a.m. today.

The men fell several feet onto a parapet running along the roof's retractable section, said Don Crowson, an assistant fire chief in Arlington. Icy conditions atop the dome may have been a factor in the accident.

Neither man, who work for Manhattan Construction, was using a safety harness, as required, he said.

One worker suffered a broken leg, chest and head injuries, and had lost consciousness. The other man injured his back but was alert and talking to rescuers. None of their injuries appeared life-threatening, Crowson said.
