Recovering stolen jobs is key to American recovery
Politico.com ^ | 12/3/09 | Lamar Smith

If President Barack Obama could snap his fingers and create 8 million new jobs, would you want him to do it? I would. And certainly the 15 million unemployed Americans would, as well.

The good news is that the president can do just that --- implement a policy that opens up 8 million jobs. The bad news is that he won't.

Four weeks ago, after the administration announced that the unemployment rate had hit 10.2 percent and 190,000 jobs were lost in October alone, 21 of my colleagues and I wrote to the president to recommend enforcing current immigration laws to open up jobs for citizens and legal immigrants. The White House has yet to respond.

And this week, notably absent from the president's jobs summit is any discussion of how to take back the 8 million jobs currently occupied by illegal immigrants and make them available to out-of-work U.S. citizens and legal immigrants.

Instead, the Obama administration has taken the opposite approach to the stolen-jobs problem. Rather than ensuring that American jobs are reserved for legal workers, the administration continues to pursue amnesty. But legalizing 11 million illegal immigrants will only further harm American workers, making it harder for citizens and legal immigrants to get and keep long-term jobs.

How can the administration justify giving millions of jobs to illegal immigrants when the economy is struggling with a 10 percent unemployment rate? Adding insult to injury, it absurdly claims that immigration enforcement is done. That is simply not true. And nowhere is that more clear than in the administration's record on work site enforcement.

Statistics from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the agency charged with enforcing the nation's immigration laws, reveal significant drops in work site enforcement activity across the board. Administrative arrests (arrests of illegal immigrants who will be placed into deportation proceedings) have fallen 68 percent, criminal arrests are down 60 percent, criminal indictments have fallen 58 percent and criminal convictions are down 63 percent --- all in just one year!

It is hard to conceive of a worse time to cut work site enforcement efforts by more than half. But that is exactly what the Obama administration has done. The administration says that it has increased the number of I-9 audits of employers. But those audits are a farce. Employers consider an occasional minor fine just the cost of doing business.

The administration also claims that audits lead to criminal investigations. That statement is true --- audits can lead to investigations --- but the administration's own record demonstrates that they haven't. As the number of audits has increased, the number of cases initiated has dropped by more than 30 percent, from an average of 93 per month to just 61. And what happens to the illegal workers? A recent Minnesota Public Radio report described the aftermath of an audit that identified 1,200 illegal immigrants in well-paying janitorial jobs: "The most important rumor to dispel was that the workers were arrested."

Instead of creating jobs for citizens and legal immigrants, the Obama administration simply told 1,000 illegal immigrants to go down the street and knock on the door of the next employer. Instead of creating jobs, the administration created competition for jobs! With so many Americans' livelihoods on the line, now is the time for the administration to stand up for citizens and legal immigrants. Now is the time for the president to direct that immigration laws be enforced. When the jobs stolen by illegal immigrants are recovered for legal workers, our true national recovery can begin.

There was no mention of an immigration moratorium at the jobs summit that would create over 100,000 jobs per month. It's time for all American citizens to get off the dime and demand an immigration moratorium and the enforcement of our immigration laws.

What? Throw all of those future (and many current!) democrat voters out of the country! That’ll be the day.

He’ll be snapping his fingers for the buses to load up and move ‘em out just a fast as the mayor of Chocolate City snapped his for buses during Katrina.

To solve this you need to hit the libs back with their own club - trial lawyers.

Pass a law that states if an American citizen applies for a job and is denied and can show that the company has even one illegal on the property, they can sue for one year of wages. If it is unprofitable to hire an illegal, it will stop. And the greed of trial lawyers will make it unprofitable overnight.

For the life of me, I cant figure out, why they dont do anything about illegal immigration.

Illegal = against the law

I am an american citizen (ahem..natural born). If I break a law, I have to pay with time served, a fine, community service..something. I am not rewarded with free health care in any emergency room and the ability to live in a house with 35 other people while taking an american job away.

These people are LAW BREAKERS. If I dont wear a damned seatbelt and get caught..I am punished. If I dont pay taxes, I am punished. If I put something on the property I own, that doesnt belong there..I am punished.

WHY arent they?

Another way we are losing jobs is they are outsourcing to countries like India. Have you needed any tech help for your computer? You get to talk to Indians, with accents, calling themselves Steward, Harry and Joe. They should do away with THIS.

I cant see a time, when some of these unemployed people, will get their jobs back. Some of their types of jobs, are no longer available in this country. They need to move to India.

Talk about locking the barn door after the horse has been stolen!!!

To state the obvious, it all started with NAFTA. When all those jobs started being "outsourced" -- what did these idiots in government THINK WOULD HAPPEN!?!?!?!?!

It is actually a twofer, driving the illegals out makes more jobs and reduces government hand outs(spending). Don't look for the common sense approach to be brought up by the likes of McCain, however.

It’s worse than outsourcing jobs to India. Companies are actually importing workers into the US with H1B visas to take American jobs because, “they can’t find any qualified people.”

Bullsh!t...

“they can’t find any qualified people to work for 25% of their salary” there, fixed it.

It’s sad but there are FReepers here who support the H1B program and see it as an extension of capitalism.

One FReeper actually told me something like, “Why should I be forced to pay a U.S. programmer $80K when I can get an H1B for $30K.”

I asked him how well he slept at night knowing that he is selling out his fellow countrymen.

Think? Nobody thinks. They just “do”.

Look at the heathcare issue. Their main objective is to pass “something”, “anything”. It doesnt matter if it makes things worse, not better.

We will end up going backwards, with people growing their own food, and treating their own illnesses. Not to mention, heating with wood..or whatever else you can find to burn. Probably..money..since thats almost worthless.

You're absolutely correct.

And that's why I now have a computer Made IN The USA - Systemax (from TigerDirect.com). And all the Tech support people are Americans who live in Ohio where the factory is(1).

Four years of that (cough) 'Dell Service' almost made eat my gun.

(1) pretty sure its Ohio?

Iceland's economy totally collapsed a year ago. They exported 7000 guest workers back to Eastern Europe, and the country is on its way to recovery.

Common sense works whenever it is implemented.

Dell. LMAO

Two years ago, I needed a computer. I always had IBMs but they stopped making them.

I never saw a computer company, that has entire sites dedicated to how crummy they are. “Dell sucks dot net, was one of them..lol

I already knew that..so dell was out of the question for me.

Yep a Dell. (live and learn)

I got it in 2000 when Tech Support was still in the US, then wham a month later I'm talking to 'Charlie' in India.

My service folder was about an inch thick, everything went except the motherboard. That includes three 'Dell' monitors. I even threatened to go to my State Attorney General.

I have heard so many nightmarish stories about dell. One thing that gets me is, if you buy a brand new computer, and the next day it breaks..they want to send you a refurbished, to replace it.

This is why I stuck with IBM. They had outstanding service. I had a computer replaced by them, without sending back the old one, until the new one arrived.

Another time, I kept wearing the white lettering off a black keyboard. I got two new keyboards, free..during my one year warranty..no questions asked..same deal..they sent it, when I got it, I sent the old one back. THEY paid for the packaging and the postage.
