Syphilis spikes in San Franscisco
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Dec 5, 2009 | Victoria Coliver

San Francisco health officials reported an alarming increase in new syphilis cases last year after years of declines.

New syphilis cases rose 55.8 percent in 2008 over the previous year, San Francisco public health officials reported.

The increase was significantly lower than the dramatic spikes reported early in the decade, when new infections increased 167 percent from 2001 to 2002. But last year's rise would seem to indicate an increase in unsafe sexual practices, which could lead to a rise in HIV infection rates.

This is also a leading indicator that condoms are not being used.

I'd say it's more of a lagging indicator.

The disconnect between actions and consequences never ceases to amaze me.

"We can’t be all that bad, after all you’re endorsing a Californian in your tag line and you’re on a web forum that was originated by a Californian in... you guessed it California."

That's a good point. I will try making a statement with more fairness now. All of California should slide into the ocean except for a few square feet of earth under each of the good Californians. ...better? ;-) [Little irony and humor there.]

“”The vast majority of early syphilis cases - about 97 percent - occurred in men, and more than 90 percent involved men who had sex with men, according to the Health Department. More than 70 percent of cases occurred among men who are HIV positive.””

We need to give homosexuals their own state, so they can marry, and butt bang to their hearts delight(and possible extinction). I vote for Massachusetts!!

Proud...to be infected with STDs.””

Check out the book “The Gift” about homosexuals seeking to become HIV positive. The mental derangement knows no boundaries.

Well as they say in San Francisco, it’s better to give than to receive!

I can’t wait to see the ‘affinity ribbons.'

Tied around their syphillis spikes, no doubt.

Someone with medical background educate me, but hasn’t Syphilis been routinely curable with penicillin? And hasn’t a new drug-resistant strain emerged in the homosexual population?

I remember my earliest introduction to the facts of this disease when, as young kids, our RN mother took us to the science and history museum in our city. The medical wing had an exhibit on Syphilis with a 18th-century style sketch of an infected man with swollen glands and sores over his neck, shaved head, and tongue. That image haunts me whenever the subject comes up. That, and the word “insanity.”
