Park City hotels feeling holiday stress

Short booking windows causing anxiety, uncertainty.

Shorter booking windows have been the trend for over a year now, making it difficult for businesses in the lodging industry to predict vacancy rates even a few weeks in advance.

this time of year, the week after Christmas should be completely sold out and the minimum stay required for a reservation is seven days.

But because travelers are booking later and wanting shorter stays, most hotels still have vacancies.

John Duvivier, director of sales and marketing for Park City Lodging, said his company has had to lower the minimum number of nights.

"We've had to bend," he said. "Eventually we said, 'Yeah, we'll take those too.'"

a trend Perkins noticed that may take a while to reverse is businesses booking on shorter timeframes. Corporate groups are the best clients for many Park City lodging businesses.

"We used to have 50 to 70 percent of our business on the books six months to a year out," she explained. "Now decisions are being made even only 45 days out."

"This trend may last a couple of years, or at least about 12 months,"

SW Colorado clobbered by storm .

Wolf Creek Ski Area says it has gotten 3.7 feet over the last 48 hours while Silverton Mountain reports 3.1 feet.

Utah’s ski resorts got some snow, but not as much as initially hoped.

For Utah, the precipitation is a welcome change from a parched November, when water managers estimated the state snowpack was about 44 percent of average for this time of year. The shift in weather patterns, which began with stormy conditions over the weekend, provides some optimism.

Fun to read about the Claim Jumper being up for sale.

Lloyd Stevens bought it for I dunno, 50K? In 71 or 72, can't remember.

Park City croaked when the Alamo changed hands.

Mid January is the SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL in Park City.

Hundreds of films are submitted, few make the cut.

This year, a movie by Sebastian Junger (”Perfect Storm”) and award winning photographer, Tim Hetherington, made the cut.

It's about a highly decorated unit in Afghanistan - BATTLE Co. of the 172rd 2-503rd AIRBORNE - “Sky Soldiers”.

Titled “Restrepo” the ‘actors’ are the paratroopers themselves. Junger and Hetherington embedded with them for most of their 15 month deployment. If you want to see what our troops go through and want to be proud - watch for “Restrepo” -

Deer Valley (by Park City) never opens early and never stays open late in season even if there is snow. They keep a shorter season to preserve a better ski experience for their customers. They opened two days ago with nothing but man-made snow on their slopes and only 15 of 100 ski runs were open.

We never ski before January, but this is definitely a bad start to the season. I can’t say I’d be disappointed if it kept people away in Jan. and Feb. when the skiing is the best...more slope for me! Bad for them, good for me, I guess.
