U.S. Fails to Persuade N.Korea Back to 6-Way Talks

A visit to North Korea by U.S. envoy Stephen Bosworth ended in failure Thursday to convince the North to return to multilateral nuclear disarmament talks. "We identified some common understandings on the need for and the role of the six-party talks and the importance of the implementation of the 2005 Joint Statement," Bosworth told reporters.

"It remains to be seen when and how [North Korea] will return to the six-party talks." He added, "This is something that requires further consultations among all six of us." But Bosworth claimed he had "very useful" meetings with senior North Korean officials.

Further bilateral meetings are expected following negotiations with the other four members of the six-party talks. Speaking in a press conference at South Korea's Foreign Ministry after the visit, the U.S. envoy added he did not meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and had requested no such meeting. Instead, he met with First Vice Foreign Minister Kang Sok-ju and top nuclear envoy Kim Kye-gwan.

For lack of a better word, that is exactly what is going on here. And all other nations (particularly enemies) know it.

Actually, the Six Party talks are a joke in the first place--built on a faulty, process-oriented premise--because it allows the Norks to keep building up their military, underground facilities and nuke/missile programs with inpunity, because "we cannot do anything to them because they are in the talks. Oh, oh, my, goodness! They will leave the sacred talks if we do anything to upset them". Not to mention that ANYTHING THE DPRK SIGN will not be adhered to. So what's the end game? What is the deliverables? Awards to State Department for their personnel files? That's about the size of it. It certainly is not regime change, liberation of the North Korean people, and obliteration of North Koreas chem, bios, nukes, missile, counterfeit, drug trade, concentration camps, kidnapping programs.

Accordingly, as always, Pyongyang have us by the huevos just as they always do. Kim il Song. Kim Jong il. So it will be with Kim Jong Un twenty years from now. It is humiliating to see this American groveling and abject knee pad action on the part of the US and its international representatives like this hear overseas. /rant off

Incorrect it would seem. They only say that they consider the talks important but they have requests if they are to return to such talks (one big one is a Peace Treaty with the US which will be a BIG MISTAKE). So, if the drive by US media wants to say they "returned to the talks", in that sense, yes, "give us everything we want and we will return to the talks". The US seems to be slapping a slightly different headline on essentially a North Korean statement issued, which is more of the same. You have to read the DPRK statement in full for context here.

US and North side are talking apples and oranges in their separate "spin room" statements after these pointless discussions the last few days in Pyongyang by Bosworth.

I also think it is a) timed by the Norks to make Obama look good; b) excitedly but inaccurately reported by the US Media who 1) also want their fellow Communist Obama to look globally good on this specific day; and 2) have not read nor analyzed the text of the DPRK statement to see that their headlines are not in alignment with the substance of what DPRK actually said.

I have seen this time and again whenever diplomatic talks break for statements. Particularly with the Norks who can be very manipulative. One side claims "We have a deal!", or "We will return to the talks!", but it is all heavily preconditioned and the other side has not even accepted the conditions.

The US media ought to just cool down on this if you want my real opinion.

And yes, it is ALL Kabuki.

Its all Spin and BS. And the US media gets excited and does not know how to report it, does not know diplomacy and diplomacy speak, and PARTICULARLY does not know Asia and negotiations with the North Koreans, and therefore reports inaccurately to the American people.

This latest Bosworth installment is fundamentally no different than what happenend under eight years of Clinton (Pritchard, Albright, Richardson, Sherman, etc) and the final 2.5 years of "W" (Rice, Hill, etc). i.e. the most abject appeasement of the North Korean regime that emboldened them in their most difficult and weakened hours, when if we had the testicles to just wait them out and not help, we could have actually tipped Chia Pet and the KWP leadership over through regime change and accordingly helped liberate the long suffering, oppressed North Korean people there. Digusting. They are talking new energy and food deals as a part of this. And a freaking "Peace Treaty" for crying out loud.
