She had no idea what she was getting into. She thought she knew, but she didn't. Now she is paying. I've always felt bad for her.

I remeber reading the biography on her and each time the CP would look for a wife, women would hurriedly get married. The Crown Prince promised her something he couldn’t deliver and it’s likely that because of the scandals in the BRF, the IHA came down on her twice as hard. Plus her father bullied her into it and in that culture, one does not say ‘no’ to a proposal, even if they wanted to. Not just because of pressure or because he’s CP, but because of other reasons I can’t remember.

“You would just not BELIEVE how incredibly opressed their lives are —NOTHING like the life of Diana, with her sneaking out, having affairs...NONE of that stuff”

And to think Diana and Fergie complained about being oppressed by the royal courtiers in Britain. Both women had no idea how good they had it.

“That smacks of class envy.”

Something I am profoundly sick of. Sad to see it even on here.

Oooohh, come on. The Japanese royal family has one of the highest standards of living in the world. All they have to do is the same stuff that the royalty of any other democracy has to do. They have no more restraints on them than any other prominent family in Japan except they have to refrain from taking bribes and the men can't have obvious mistresses. The women can pretty much do as they please as long as they don't ever do things that would embarrass pretty much any woman in public. The great "shame" of not having a son isn't the women's problem.

While it's true that the Imperial Household Agency should be investigated for diversion of funds, nepotism, and other faults of a secretive, highly-funded bureaucracy, it only has so much control over what the royals do. The royals' major fault seems to be acquiescence to obligation rather than any sort of propensity to mental illness.

It is very, very stressful being married into the Japanese Royal Family because of the strict rules the Royal family has to follow.

The present Empress also suffered from depression for many, many years once she married into the Royal Family.

“This has happened to A LOT of them. I would say they really are prisoners. The Imperial Household Agency basically dictates their every movement.”

Gorgeous suit.

I felt sorry for Princess Masako all along. She, like a number of other ladies who have married into royal families in the last decade or so, was well on in her 30s at the time ... and then they’re expect to produce sons for guys who don’t spend any time with them.

You’d think by NOW, after all these centuries, royal men would get the message that they’re not going to have legitimate heirs unless they have sex with their wives.
