New Obama Party Kerfuffle: Downsizing Hanukkah

Just because no one is too worried about gate crashers showing up at the White House Hanukkah party doesn't mean the guest list isn't being watched very carefully.

The annual celebration has grown in recent years into an important bellwether in American Jewish circles, a sign of which leaders are in good graces and who is losing clout. So the Obama administration's announcement that it was cutting the size of the Dec. 16 party by more than a third has left many wondering who will make the cut, and what some might do to get their name added to the (shrunken) list.

"There's a lot of emotions involved and a lot of heavy lobbying, and I'm sure they're having even more heavy lobbying than we had," says Tevi Troy, a former Bush White House domestic policy adviser and liaison to the Jewish community.

Troy has done the math. Obama garnered about 75 percent of the Jewish vote last year, which by extension means there could be three times as many Jews who would like an invitation to his Hanukkah party than there were for the Bush administration's. But a White House official said that about 500 people are invited to this year's event, a significant drop from last year's crowd. As many as 800 received

The appropriate protest would be an army of jews marching around the White House blowing a trumpet.

Come on, American Jews who voted for Obama--wake up! This man is an anti-semite who's make his pro-Palestinian, anti-Israeli position clear on more than one occasion. If he wasn't concerned about losing a sizeable chunk of his base, the White House Hanukkah party would consist of a one-card-table buffet in the White House's smallest room, with the president "regretfully unable to attend."

I know there are plenty of conservative Jewish FReepers who understand this, but there are far too many Jewish liberals who don't!

America’s Jew suffering from “Offen Juden” Syndrome (OJS) better wake up and see the socialism written all over the Obamassiah.

IIRC, socialism had a distinctly negative impact on Jews in the last iteration of “Hope Und Change”, under the Third Reich.

I think the bigger issue is the fact that the President is having any parties to begin with. His job is supposedly to protect and defend the Constitution, not hosting social events. Our tax dollars shouldn’t be wasted on stuff like this. No matter what religion or group is involved.

So people understand where I'm coming from, I admit I don't thing The One is a Muslim or an antisemite. But this is just stupid.

Christmas is a national holiday, it's natural the White House and the Capital would have displays. Public displays for other faiths are nice too. But it seems to me religious celebrations in the White House should be relevant to the faith of the occupant. Many Christians recognize the miracles of Chanukah, the oil and the important victory over the Seleucids, who would have destroyed the Jewish faith. GWB started this "tradition", I've no knowledge of his religious position on Chanukah, but I wouldn't for a minute question his desire to celebrate the miracles. It's proper in that sense.

BHO, color me skeptical. When religious celebrations devolve into who's inviting who, the dem invited fewer than the rep, the significance is diminished. I'd prefer he not have a celebration at all.

Good points, but it seems that he’s made far more of a big deal about Eid than any Jewish holiday.

Is this indicative of his true feelings, or just kissing ass?

He’s spoken frequently about his Muslim relatives, and his youth in a Muslim nation. So yes, it’s reasonable to assume he’d have some affection for Eid.

Let's face it: The main reason for the reduced invitee list is that there is a subset of Jewish dignitaries who are being punished for their politically incorrect views, especially with respect to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They are considered by the Obama White House as “obstacles to peace.”
