Motorcycle rocket launcher: definitely try at home

Motorcycle_Rocket_launcher.jpgStep one: make extra powerful bottle rockets by mounting model rocket engines to skewers. Step two: make custom launch tubes, spray paint, mount to fairing. Step three: mount launch controller within easy reach. Step four: commence mayhem. Congratulations sir, you've just managed to make motorcycling even more dangerous.

Funny thought, could you butch up a Prius by adding a rocket launcher or is a Prius destined to be eternally gay?

Darwin would be proud...

For a second I thought this was going to be one of those urban myths with the guy putting the rocket motor on the back to give them a “little” boost...

You know there is a reason insurance for these rice rocket riders is so high...

Here's a quick question for model rocketeers. Most cities, and possibly even states, ban bottle rockets, but allow model/sport rockets. Why the difference? Compare a bottle rocket with a model rocket using a pre-packaged Estes-type motor. Both have a launch phase and both have a small explosive to pop the chute/recovery mechanism (not all model rocket engines have the recovery charge, but most do).

Does this fellow's re-do on the legal model rocket engine turn it into an illegal bottle rocket? I'm guessing the skewer is the launch rail, not attached to the rocket motor itself, but I'm not sure based on the original post.

Whoops. This “both have a small explosive to pop the chute/recovery mechanism” should be “both have a small explosive - the bottle rocket for oohs and ahhs - and the model rocket to pop the recovery mechanism.”

Model rocketry has a defined safety code that requires a safe recovery of the rocket. Also, you are not to have an on board explosive device not associated with recovering the model. The engines also are designed and tested to work within defined parameters.

IIRC, the Estes rocket doesn’t even have a real explosive to pop the cork. It’s more of a gas that builds up as it burns in the final phase. Maybe that’s the difference?

Yeah, I understand that. But really, they are both designed to leave the ground. Why the ban on one, and not the other?

My new wife had a VW new beatle. A hardtop, but she's into the Red Hats and had a red stilleto heal hanging from the mirror. I hated that car.

We just traded it for a Lincoln Town Car. Is that over compensating?

I've always thought that machine guns instead of headlights would work quite well.

After all, the muzzle blast should provide enough temporary illumination to make driving relatively safe.

When I was a kid, we had bottle-rocket wars on our bikes, and so I managed to rig up two small pipes on my handle-bars for launching platforms. The accuracy left something to be desired, of course, though there were direct hits from time to time, and it looked cool.

Oh come on, do you really need two mini-guns? Considering the rate of fire on those things you would be better off dumping the second gun and just carrying the weight in extra ammo for the remaining gun. That little 50 round belt hanging down in the picture is going to go BURP and that's about it.

Now a couple of M2 .50 Cal would be cool. Sure the mini-gun has style, but I just love the classics.

I guess people who tape a rocket engine and firecrackers to a balsa wood stick are not following the Model Rocket Safety Code?
