Day Laborers, Advocates March On Oyster Bay Town Hall
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Several dozen day laborers and Latino advocates marched on Oyster Bay Town Hall Tuesday over a crackdown on day laborers.
Mona Rivera reports
Samantha Fredrickson, of the Nassau County Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union, took part in the protest. “In September, the town of Oyster Bay passed a law that is discriminatory and unconstitutional and anti-immigrant, and it criminalizes the ability to stand on a public sidewalk and seek employment,” said Fredrickson.
The town has posted “no stopping” signs along Forest Avenue — an area popular for picking up day laborers soliciting work.
The town calls it a public safety issue. Day laborers say it hampers their ability to find work and they want the ordinance appealed. If they are found to be soliciting work, they will be slapped with a $250 fine.
