Ex-Eagle Runyan ready for S.J. congressional race

By Cynthia Burton Inquirer Staff Writer

Former Eagles offensive lineman Jon Runyan is "100 percent committed" to running for Congress from South Jersey - after the Super Bowl.

From a San Diego hotel room, the new Chargers tackle yesterday undertook his first interviews as a Third District congressional aspirant, in a burst of telephone calls with political reporters.

He said he was ready to take on a "dumb-jock" stereotype Democrats were likely to push. And as soon as football season ends, on Feb. 7, he will spend time talking to voters about the issues.

He's very popular. I think this is a pick up.

Looking more and more like the 80 seat turnaround could be possible.

Since when was football a non-contact sport for girly-men? Everything in the trenches is dirty even before the ball is snapped. It would be fun to see some liberal in the well trying to intimidate Runyan before a vote.

Reagan, aside, but is anyone else bothered by the number of actors, athletes and other entertainment figures becoming our leaders?

I dunno, I would think being a dirty offensive lineman in the NFL would be good training for DC politics.

The 36-year-old Mount Laurel resident also said that - with the benefit of hindsight - he probably would have voted for the bank bailouts and restricting executive pay, because those strategies seem to have worked.

That was the point of my sarcasm. GOP needs to give up or get a spine.

“Reagan, aside, but is anyone else bothered by the number of actors, athletes and other entertainment figures becoming our leaders?”

Its become a popularity contest. The population is too involved in “Survivor” or some other show to care. Pro sports are the modern day Gladiator games and we have too many here that can’t see that they are a distraction. In Louisiana more people care about hating Nick Sabin than in getting rid of Mary the Whore. If they had to choose between a National Championship for LSU and becoming slaves they would choose LSU. Were getting ready to elect her brother as Mayor so the change will be from a chocolate city to a Red,as in Communist, city. People forget that their dad was HUD director for LBJ and his nickname was “Moon the Coon.”
