After nearly a year away from their families, 1,200 members of the Minnesota National Guard will soon be coming home from Iraq. The 34th Infantry Division, known as the Red Bulls, won't be home for the holidays, but they will arrive not long after the new year.

The first wave of men and women will start coming home next month. By the end of February, they should all be home.

Theresa Nace is counting the days. Her husband Specialist Timothy Nace, is one of the guardsmen returning home.

She said, "It's very helpful knowing that once 2010 comes then we're right down the homestretch of them coming home."

Chaplain John Morris spoke to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS via satellite from Red Bull headquarters in Basa, Iraq.

Morris said the Red Bulls are ready to come home.

"It's what you dream about. It's what you live for," said Morris. "It's what you mark your calendar down for so we're very excited."

Returning troops will be able to get help through a national program that originated in Minnesota. It's called "Beyond the Yellow Ribbon" and it provides employment assistance, counseling, education and more.

Dad spent time in Italy, N. Africa and some other stuff he would never talk about. He was a code breaker because he spoke several languages and had a gift with word puzzles...

They brought him back in Korea for the same reasons...

He was the best and I miss him dearly. Mom was pretty sad, today....

I know a couple of these guys myself, glad they are coming home again! I will never forget that picture from '04, if I remember correctly, the picture appeared over here within a day of Kerry's comment.

Thanks for the post and may God bless your Dad and your family, he sounds like a great guy!

Merry Christmas

Bless him, I know you miss him. We all love my dad dearly. It sounds like what he did was a big help in the overall war effort. My dad was 19 years old, he was just running an armored bulldozer and lifting mines -- not as important in the big picture, but every little bit helps.

He's 85 and still perking along, but you know that all the WWII guys are slowing down as the train nears the station. We will all have to pay Nature's debt eventually - as C.S. Lewis said, the mortality rate amongst Christians is still one hundred percent.
