MEXICO CITY – Assailants on Tuesday gunned down the mother, aunt and siblings of a marine killed in a raid that took out one of Mexico's most powerful cartel leaders — sending a chilling message to troops battling the drug war: You go after us, we wipe out your families.

The brazen pre-dawn slayings came just hours after the navy honored Melquisedet Angulo as a national hero at a memorial service.

Simple. Declare an all-out war against the drug cartels.

Pretty obvious response really. This is why they block out faces in pictures.

Took out the cartel head. Dumb politicians probably pushed for the ceremony, ignoring military advice.

I see no reason why we need a wall between Mexico and the US. /s

Los Pepes need to be reborn in Mexico with the help of CENTRA SPIKE. Otherwise it's going to spill onto this side of the border like it already is.

If you want to know what the trigger point will be. It will start by kidnapping. That signature breakdown in law enforcement will be what starts the blood letting on this side of the border.

Hmmm... This is a narco state we're talking about: they'd be declaring an all out war on themselves.

Gah...

How much do I have to donate to this site to get an edit button (like Ars Technica for example)?

When the Government of Mexico realizes the fight against the Drug Gangs needs to be treated like a war or domestic terrorism instead of a criminal action they will begin to win the fight.

Suspend the Constitution, suspend Habeas Corpus, disband the legislative branch, declare martial law....whatever it is you need to route these people out and defeat them.

At some point, the leadership of the Mexican government must confront the question as to whether the drug syndicates have ceased to be a law enforcement issue and now represent a clear threat to the sovereignity of the state. If the answer is determined to be “yes”, then the rules of engagement must, and most likely will, dramatically change.

Simpler yet, Mexico should just legalize the crap and make it legit. If anything can be legit in Mexico, that is. But do it anyway, seriously. Prohibition obviously isn’t working. Legalize it and tax the heck out of it or just keep piling up dead bodies..

It seems the cartels have altered the rules of engagement to the point where this should no longer be treated as merely a law enforcement matter.

Executing civilians in reprisal is usually treated as a War Crime, and ought to be punished summarily following a drumhead court martial.

Remember the DOD report on how Mexico is on the brink of becoming like Afghanistan.

Just imagine a few dozen RPG's raining down on federal buildings, public buildings and military installations.

Some choice assassinations, kill the right judges and politicians....and the government folds like a cheap lawn chair.

All of which might work if Mexico were a society built on the rule of law. It isn’t and this is the result.

Similar scenarios are recorded in a book called Killing Pablo (about Pablo Escobar.) His demise was finally brought about when a group of vigilantes called Los Pepes started killing those closest to him, threatening his family, in essence using the same tactics on him, that he had used for years to terrorize Columbia.

The same can happen here in the US to those that testify against AQ members at a trial.

Thank you for making sense.

You go on the offensive and kill the traffickers everywhere and everytime you find them. Don’t give them a chance to retaliate. Put them back on their heels and keep hitting till they are all dead.
