Investigators believe the infamous "Work Sets You Free" sign could have been destined for a private collector who was determined to own one the symbols of Nazi terror.

Five people were detained yesterday during raids in a village near the northern city of Torun in connection with the robbery on Friday.

Police found the inscription, which had hung over the entrance to the camp since 1940, hidden in woodland and covered with brushwood and snow.

Dariusz Nowak, a police spokesman, described the suspects as "common criminals" aged 20 to 39, and said they would face up to 10 years in jail if convicted.

Police have ruled out a link to the far-right and said the most likely motive for the robbery was for financial gain.

"Robbery and material gain are considered one of the main possible motives, but whether that was done on someone's order will be determined in the process of the investigation," said deputy investigator Marek Wozniczka.

Authorities have also stressed that the case remains open, and that they may make further arrests.

As well as ascertaining as to whether or not somebody had ordered the theft of the sign, investigators are probing as to just how the thieves gained intimate knowledge of Auschwitz's security.

The robbers managed to bypass an elaborate and extensive system of cameras and security guards despite having to carrying the heavy and unwieldy sign.

It has led to speculation that the criminals had inside knowledge.

Investigators have remained tight-lipped on what led them to the house other than to say that it was connected to one of the 100 phone calls they had received in connection with the crime.

The Auschwitz museum welcomed the recovery of the sign.

"This is a day of huge relief," said Pawel Sawicki, a museum spokesman. "Not just

OH, P.S. My friends in Poland said they tracked them down partially by the footsteps in the snow which led them in the right direction.

Somebody like Soros -- who developed a thriving business in his youth, collecting clothing at a death camp in Hungary, then trundling it back to the ghetto in his wagon...and selling it.

A great reference video about Auschwitz...(as much as it pains
me to endorse a PBS/Public Broadcast System product):

Auschwitz: Inside the Nazi State
http://www.pbs.org/auschwitz/

Ignore/fast-forward beyond the Linda Ellerbee “discussion panels”.
I don’t have the DVD version...but when I saw it on PBS in Los Angeles,
that was the truly worthless part of the program.

(WARNING: SHOW SPOILERS!!!)
The segments about the former camp guard made me ANGRY...until
you hear “the rest of the story” on the guy at the end of the documentary.
The story of the misery endured by the Russian POW that survived
Auschwitz, only to return to a different type of hell in the USSR...
awful.
And the story of the Holocaust survivor that returned to his home town...
only to see how a villager had torn his family home to pieces in order
to find non-existant “Jewish treasure”...
all of these are fascinating and disturbing vignettes.

Sorry friend, but you are wrong. Obama does not have workers (they are capitalists), he has paid volunteers. Also Obama’s sign reads “Progressive government is freedom - Obey and be free!”
