“I did not realize he was an oncologist...”

Why would that make him honest? Griffith is only doing this to survive 2010 and scuttle any Conservative challengers.

“I saw this guy on Hannity, wit Mark Steryn he more conserative than 95% of GOP. Welcome to GOP.”

Griffith is not a conservative.

Griffith is about as good as you’ll get in North Alabama. Remember that this same area was base of the Jacksonians in the 1830s, it was the area of white support for the Republicans in Reconstruction, it was the home area of the Populists during the 1890s, it always sided with the more liberal candidates during one party days, and it is still an area where everyone’s electricity is provided by the government and where people fundamentally believe in big government of some kind. You are not going to be able to get someone that much more conservative elected in that district. It’s just the way it is. They are socially conservative. They are not economically conservative. You want to find a place where the general public actually are Blue Dogs you go to this district. The only reason why it is even in play now is because of the race issue. It’s big up there and has become more visible this year. Griffith realizes it. That’s why he switched.

I imagine Griffith will vote roughly the same way Richard Shelby votes. It’s not as good a record as Sessions granted but it is still pretty damned conservative and Shelby is actually able to win this area in landslides even with its populist Blue Dog tilt.

Griffith is our best guy and as someone who has switched like Shelby he can appeal to those rural blue dogs in a way that his opponents, a Huntsville local politician with no base outside of the city, and a black candidate who simply would get throttled by the heightened racial tension now in the district.

Not to mention Griffith is a huge asset in our campaign to take back the legislature.

“Griffith is about as good as you’ll get in North Alabama.”

Maybe. I’ve talked to some of the men who were going to run against him. I could vote for them. I will never cast a ballot for Griffith.

“I imagine Griffith will vote roughly the same way Richard Shelby votes. It’s not as good a record as Sessions granted but it is still pretty damned conservative and Shelby is actually able to win this area in landslides even with its populist Blue Dog tilt.”

I’m not betting on Griffith doing even that well.

“Griffith is our best guy and as someone who has switched like Shelby he can appeal to those rural blue dogs in a way that his opponents, a Huntsville local politician with no base outside of the city, and a black candidate who simply would get throttled by the heightened racial tension now in the district.”

If someone like Griffith is our best guy, it’s time to reconsider strategy.

I have worked with but not in an oncology department. May not make him completely honest, but who is? However, it is a specialty that require a particular type of healthcare professional. If he is any decent oncologist, he has witnessed first- hand the extreme emotions that accompany the ups and downs of cancer treatment.

That district was drawn by the legislature to be a Democratic district (specifically a Bud Cramer keeping district). They took 4 rural counties where all local offices are decided in the Dem primary (and legislative seats too), a nominally Republican county that still has Dems in county government, the county containing Huntsville which is the ultimate Alabama swing county and the parts of Morgan County which have astronimically high union membership/more blacks (more Democrats)

Even with Obama at the top of the ticket Wayne Parker only got 48%. That’s because Griffith was very popular with white voters in Huntsville. I imagine he is still popular enough with a lot of those rural Blue Dogs who voted for him in the primary.

As long as that district is what it is Griffith will be about the best you can get. These people are not anti-government. They are anti-government doing the wrong things. They like that the TVA gives them really cheap electricity. They don’t like the government telling them they can’t have guns and so forth.

Plus, as I said before, I really want Griffith going into these longheld Democratic legislative districts with our Republican candidates saying that Obama is why he switched and tying the Dem incumbents to Obama. I don’t care what happens after 2010 but for 2010 I want Griffith on the campaign trail as someone who is on our ballot.

I’m puzzled why you would think that would make one (1) a conservative and that (2) feelings were the basis of proper legislation?

I’m somewhat familiar with it. I live in it. Have for a long time.

“Even with Obama at the top of the ticket Wayne Parker only got 48%.”

Wayne Parker was a poor choice to run, which is why he lost.

I will never pull the lever for Griffith. I know too much about him and have spoken too often with his staff to ever vote for the man.

Well. Will you at least admit that Griffith would have some value on the campaign trail with our Republican candidates speaking against people like Irons, Curtis, Black, White, Letson, Duke, Barron, Denton, Butler, Little, Bedford, Mitchem and so forth.

Griffith blows a huge hole in the theory that the Democratic machine has used up there for years about how they’re still the party of the good ole down home country folks. (So does Davis if he gets nominated). Griffith has a great propaganda value.

I don’t care about 2012 honestly (though I think it’s hard to get a Sessions type elected there, based on Sessions losing several counties in it to a candidate endorsed by NARAL in 2002) but for 2010, I want him standing with Mike Hubbard, Bradley Byrne, Luther Strange and the rest of our ticket to help us bring the legislature back under conservative control for the first time in at least a decade.

Was there some question there, or just a statement?

Griffith’s switch will derail the effort to replace him with a Conservative - at least one from the GOP. That outweighs any PR value.

“Griffith has a great propaganda value.”

Never trust a traitor... even one seen to be helping your side. The Dems understood that with Arlen.

It was a question in which I used the wrong punctuation. As this is the internet and not something I get paid for I’m not proofreading.

And I disagree with you on both points. That Griffith is not conservative and that ideological purity in one Congressional seat is more important than the legislature.

If we take the legislature next year we will control this state for generations. The legislature will be redrawn to be as Republican as is possible. The rural sheriffs and their associates will all become Republicans. We’ll have the old one party system back and we’ll have it back for at least a generation.

If the Democrats hold the legislature then the status quo continues. Democrats redistrict to keep it dem. Rural sheriffs and associates remain Dem and there’s a very good chance that they’ll still control the state with this arrangement for another generation.

Griffith is pro-life. He’s against gun control. He voted against the stimulus. He supports the death penalty. He’s against gay marriage. Surely, you can stand having him for one more term if we can get back the one party system of conservative control, this time under the GOP? Isn’t two more years of Griffith a good trade off for that?

Are you in his district? Have you interacted with Griffith at all?

Griffith thinks Congress has absolute power - that there are no Constitutional limits of any kind.

I am speaking of his change being attributed to health care reform. Feelings are being used whether or not you deem them ‘proper legislation”. How about the parade of the pitiful they used to start this and every other monstrosity of legislation? I don’t care for it myself, as I am the survival of the fittest type, but reality checks are in order.

This is what they are trying to do, and you are suggesting we do as we are being told.

No. Do not obey as you are being told, but rebel patriotically.
