Luke 2: 1-20 The Story of Christ's Birth

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem (because he was of the house and lineage of David), to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being with child.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord come upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another: "Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this king which is to come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us." And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

<< Isaiah 53 >>
New International Version

1Who has believed our message

and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

2He grew up before him like a tender shoot,

and like a root out of dry ground.

He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,

nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

3He was despised and rejected by men,

a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.

Like one from whom men hide their faces

he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4Surely he took up our infirmities

and carried our sorrows,

yet we considered him stricken by God,

smitten by him, and afflicted.

5But he was pierced for our transgressions,

he was crushed for our iniquities;

the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,

and by his wounds we are healed.

6We all, like sheep, have gone astray,

each of us has turned to his own way;

and the Lord has laid on him

the iniquity of us all.

7He was oppressed and afflicted,

yet he did not open his mouth;

he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,

and as a sheep before her shearers is silent,

so he did not open his mouth.

8By oppressiona and judgment he was taken away.

And who can speak of his descendants?

For he was cut off from the land of the living;

for the transgression of my people he was stricken.b

9He was assigned a grave with the wicked,

and with the rich in his death,

though he had done no violence,

nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,

and though the Lord makesc his life a guilt offering,

he will see his offspring and prolong his days,

and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.

11After the suffering of his soul,

he will see the light [of life]d and be satisfiede;

by his knowledgef my righteous servant will justify many,

and he will bear their iniquities.

12Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,g

and he will divide the spoils with the strong,h

because he poured out his life unto death,

and was numbered with the transgressors.

For he bore the sin of many,

and made intercession for the transgressors.

Eight people join the family of Christ in baptism at Nisshin Christ Church in suburban Nagoya, Japan.

I can't think of a better way to thank the Father for the gift of His Son. As the song says, "obedience is the very best way to show that you believe..."

“Wasn’t jesus actually born in the spring sometime?”

I’ve heard that, because the shepherds would not have been outside in the winter at night, apparently. Nevertheless, since the actual date is not known, having the celebration when the days are just starting to get longer is not a bad place to put it, from the standpoint of the Light coming into the world.

Merry Christmas from Lebanon

Laylat ‘Aid (Night of the Feast) - to the tune of Jingle Bells: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqn_ryespBk&feature=related

Night of the feast, tonight is the night of the feast
There are decorations and people, and the voice of the bell rings out afar
Night of the feast
Childrens’ voices repent anew, and tomorrow love is new
Friends greet each other, presents are behind the door, and the tree is in the house
Small children form a circle around it, celebrating, forming a bracelet of hands
And the hands hang songs and clusters of grapes on the tree
The houses look like a cave shining with jewels
On the side of the house there is snow and ribbons of moonlight
Some came from far away to the rendezvous
They knock on people’s doors and go for a walk together
And the goodwill among us grows

Muluk al-Majus (The Magi Kings): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj94Lw2FLzU

The Magi kings on Christmas night, with snow covering their crowns,
Followed the Christmas star along a path to find the child named Jesus
They had with them incense, gold, and silk, and their names were written above their swords
Tonight the glorious kings came to the King named Jesus
They saw a child in a manger of straw and next to Him his mother is praying
They left their swords, took off their crowns, and bowed their heads to the divine King
The star shone above the door, and the cave became like a little sky
The shepherds stopped in front of the door and are praying to the divine King

Talj, Talj (Snow, Snow): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbsFNd4UZcA&feature=related

Snow, snow, it’s snowing
The stars are mysterious, the flowers on the roads are cold
Snow, snow, it’s snowing
The clouds are tired, on the hills the tents are lit
A small cave is awake, and in it lies a small child
In his sweet eyes there is much love
Snow, snow, it’s snowing
Every heart, every pasture, shines with love like snow
Shepherds come from far away
Where is the promised child?
Here, oh shepherds, is the celebration
Here in the night is what you seek
Snow, snow, rain down love and goodwill and snow
On every heart, on every pasture
Affection, goodwill, and love are like snow
