As a parent on the Delmarva penninsula I have followed this local story with interest. This is a parent's worst nightmare and our thoughts and prayers are with Sarah and her family.

There safeguards to help prevent these types of things. While no one seemed to suspect the alleged perpetrator, there seems to be an indication that something was amiss: read more...

I bet she knew. Maybe that’s why she kicked him out.

One of the articles stated that she DID know, and went ahead and endangered her nieces anyway.

I'll have to remember to do a search on all available sex offender websites if things seem off with a guy. (/sarc)

The author has it totally wrong: the onus should not be placed on the guardian. Rather, sex offenders should be sentenced to life imprisonment with the first offense.

And that poor child had to suffer because of a very stupid aunt.

Would you please post a link?

But whether she knew or not, sex offenders should still get life. They’re ticking time bombs.

“According to charging documents, Fothergill dated Leggs “for a short period of time a month or so ago and ... Leggs just stopped contacting her.” Fothergill told police that she knew that Leggs was a registered sex offender.”

There is another update on this story today on Salisbury News (true, just a blog, but generally much more informative and factual than the "news" outlets).

The aunt broke off with Leggs WHEN she found out he was a sexual offender. An adult was present in the home at all times.

The sheriff's office is not making things public yet - I heard they are going to go for the death penalty in this case, but it has to be done right the first time, so the SO is keeping things from the public (who really has no right to know).

Here is the link:

You'll have to cut and paste since I don't know how to put a direct link, but I think this blog answers many questions that have been raised in this tragedy.
