Fire Napolitano
National Review ^

Fire Napolitano [Jonah Goldberg]

Understandbly, the White House is trying very hard to get out in front of the would-be Christmas bomber story. The head of the Department of Homeland Security isn't helping. I watched her on three shows and each time she was more annoying, maddening and absurd than the pevious appearance. It is her basic position that the "system worked" because the bureaucrats responded properly after the attack. That the attack was "foiled" by a bad detonator and some civilian passengers is proof, she claims, that her agency is doing everything right. That is just about the dumbest thing she could say, on the merits and politically. I would wager that not one percent of Americans think the system is "working" when terrorists successfully get bombs onto planes (and succeed in activating them). Probably even fewer think it's fair that they have to take off their shoes, endure delays and madness while a known Islamic radical — turned in by his own father — can waltz onto a plane (and into the country). DHS had no role whatsoever in assuring that this bomb didn't go off. By her logic if the bomb had gone off, the system would have "worked" since it has done everything right.

Napolitano has a habit of arguing that DHS is a first responder outfit. Its mission is to deal with "man-caused-disasters" afer they occur. It appears she really believes it. If the White House wants to assure people that it takes the war on terror seriously (a term Robert Gibbs used this morning by the way), they could start by firing this patenly unqualified hack.

Here she is her own words, over at RealClearPolitics.

Jonah's right. Janet needs to step down or be fired or be forced to fly commercial ...

AND Gibbs is out there to say, “The security procedures have been in place for a long time” and “they are going to be looked at.” Why didn’t he come right out and say, “The procedures were put in place by the Bush Administration.” Guess someone smarter than Gibbs decided that wouldn’t work any longer.

What has Napolitano been doing all this time if not reviewing the security procedures of this country?

Why would Dear Leader fire her? In his sick view of America, the Dept of Homeland Security is more like the Committee for State Security. As long as (white/Christian/veteran) terrorists aren’t threatening the State, then it’s not really terrorism.

Send her back to NYC where she came from, I’m sure they love her. Keep her away from AZ, please. Our budget has had enough of her.

It is her basic position that the "system worked" because the bureaucrats responded properly after the attack.

If it's her view that the department of homeland securities mandate is to just clean up after a "man caused disaster" then she has proved her incompetence...and Obama's for selecting her. The real man caused disaster is the Obama administration.

And he boarded WITHOUT a passport, which is apparently common practice according to one news article I read earlier.

A challenge: Can any freeper name a post 9-11 instance in which a dire security threat did suddenly present on an airliner, the situation was resolved, and this was BECAUSE of new regulations?

My own belief is that we simply have to head them off BEFORE they even get on the plane...

That is just about the dumbest thing she could say.

That's because she IS dumb: she's a democrat; she's an idiot -- right along with all the rest of the idiots in our nation's capital starting with the present occupant of the WH.

"Terrorism" is dead in obambi's administration, remember? And they can't even get crime prevention right.

She had no business in that position to begin with. The entire administration is totally inept.

Sorry Gibbs but the terrorist’s father notified the US embassy just last month. Alsos, Amsterdam officials said the U.S. cleared the passenger list. That makes it a State Department failure as well as a Homeland Security failure.

It’s deeper than that. Bush and some conservatives believed that yet ANOTHER government department being formed would somehow save the US from terrorists and other threats. That’s the fatal flaw. The CIA has never been fixed, it’s filled with career bureaucrats and timid risk avoiders, the FBI has, more than once, been rocked by scandal, even in its science laboratories and evidence-—the bureaucracy is intent on self-perpetuation-—not on the safety of the US.

it’s difficult for the well-intentioned and determined agent or civil servant to make a difference and this is just more proof.

Meanwhile, the FEDERALIZED TSA workers are more incompetent than ever, the regulations are more oppressive and for no reason and without any possible foreseeable benefit.

I’d rather have Blackwater and private security firms handle PRIVATE security for airlines and transportation.

Absolutely right. And again I will waste my time calling the White House and DHS (if I can find a number) to tell them this nincompoop must resign or be fired

Two terrorists attacks on US soil since Mr. Empty Suit was elected Our Pres. TWO! 2!

How many more will there be over the next 3 long years?

Cripes, this is even more important than the economy.

And he cannot, CANNOT be premitted to return any Gitmo jihadis to Yemen.

Someone needs to stop that plan in its tracks.
