The CEO for Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFMI) is relinquishing his chairman title. John Mackey is not only the CEO but also the co-founder of this company. He also held the title of chairman since 1978.
After much petitioning by some of the shareholders, Mackey decided to voluntarily give up the title of "chairman" in an effort to keep peace and to appease the activist group. Taking his place will be John Elstrott, the current lead director. When Elstrott takes over as chairman, his previous position will be discontinued. Mackey will continue to be the company's CEO.
One reason for the group's disapproval of Mackey holding both positions is due to his editorial opposing Obama's proposed health care reform. Shareholders expressed belief that this decision inevitably damaged the company's reputation. The activist group believes Mackey misused the company in an effort to advance his personal political views.
Business is business. The stockholders run the show. End of story.
Fine I will take my business elsewhere they can run it into the ground for all I care.
Ridiculous. This guy FOUNDED the company, expressed his opinion, and is run out on a rail.
Frankly, I think we ought to buy stock in Whole Foods and then demand he be RE-INSTATED.
Once he sold a lot of shares to the public, it was no longer “his”.

I guess I consider the obvious leftists part of the background, and don’t notice them as much as my fellow Orthodox Christians, and the food itself.
I do, however, notice those reusable bags designed by toilet-paper queen Cheryl Crow, and refuse to buy or use them. I have another design of Whole Foods bag that I fill up with vegetables I get from another (and cheaper) store.

It seems coconut oil is extracted without petroleum solvents. But I’d check to be sure the mfg website to be sure
A really good oil is plain old cod liver oil. A tablespoon in the morning on an empty stomach. Must be empty stomach and the good part of the cod liver oil will go where it is needed. If you are serious about Vitamin D3 5000 units then take K2 also. NOW brand makes them both and NOW is always ethical inexpensive and reliable. NOW HQ is in Indiana IIRC
Mackey appeared for the full hour on John Stossel’s new show a week or so ago, and did a pretty good job defending himself. The audience was half conservative/libertarian (nicely dressed, polite, articulate) and half loon (liberal, angry, unkempt, sour).
He will remain as CEO, which is what counts, I suppose. I wonder if this ceremonial stepping down from ‘chairman’ is to prevent the shareholders from ousting him from CEO as well?
I shop at WF once in a while, but being among that many leftists (especially if I’ve just gotten out of work and am in shirt and tie) just creeps me out.
Yeah. He wouldn’t be the only founder to lose his own company, but it’s certainly strange that this one seems to be motivated entirely by Obama politics.
John is still the CEO and Whole Foods still a great place to shop.
And interestingly, for several years, whenever there has been a thread about Whole Foods, I have praised the company. This was true long before John’s piece in the WSJ and is true now that a change has been made at Whole Foods.
As for the stock, I bought some soon after it went public in 1992 for less than $10.00 a share and saw it go all the way to $78.00.
Now the stock is under $30.00 and a change would be wise for any company that saw its stock fall in that manner.

Understanding Oil Extraction Methods:
Expeller pressed vs solvent extracted oils
Expeller pressing is the method of extracting oil with a mechanical press rather than utilizing a chemical extraction process. There are no solvent (chemical) residues in oil that has been expeller pressed resulting in a cleaner more pure oil, higher in natural colors and flavors. The process of extraction is the critical quality difference between oils often found in the natural foods marketplace as opposed to mass market or supermarket brands.
An expeller press is a screw type machine, which presses oil seeds through a caged barrel-like cavity. This machine uses friction and continuous pressure from the screw drives to move and compress the seed material. The oil seeps through small openings that do not allow seed fiber solids to pass through. Afterward, the pressed seeds are formed into a hardened cake, which is removed from the machine. Pressure involved in expeller pressing creates heat in the range of 140-210º F (60-99º C).
Solvent extraction is achieved through the grinding of seed. The ground seed or cake is then purged or washed with a petroleum distillate (the most common chemical used is hexane) which releases the oil in the seed. The solvent is then “flashed off” by heating the oil in a sealed chamber. The oil/solvent blend is next heated to 212º F (100º C) to distill off the solvent. This process theoretically leaves virtually no detectable levels of solvent in the oil if the proper techniques have been applied. However, microscopic portions (up to 25 parts per million) of hexane can remain in the meal and the finished oil. Commercial oil companies claim hexane is completely removed in the recovery phase of the extraction cycle. However, this cannot be guaranteed as manufacturing practices and quality control standards vary enormously from processor to processor.
The majority of vegetable oils sold as bottled product or food ingredient in the mass market or conventional food industry are solvent extracted oils. Mass market oils, however, are not required to be labeled as solvent extracted. The main reason for using solvent extraction is largely economic as the greater efficiencies of solvent extraction maximizes yields and profits. This is why solvent extraction has evolved into the most common form of oil removal – it delivers the least expensive and subsequently the lowest quality vegetable oils.

What’s so dumb is that government healthcare is going to be totally counter to the whole foods philosophy. There will never be coverage for natural supplements as opposed to pharmaceuticals. Healthy living will only apply to which group they can target. (overweight, junk food etc...) They only care about health to the extent that they can tax a behavior, not actually promote health. Guess I’ll be doing all my shopping elsewhere. I need to be gluten and casein free. Too bad I’m a conservative - the board losers don’t want my business.
The stock looks like a short to me. Giving in to union pressure shows poor management. Name one company that the unions exert significant pressure on that does well.
