There are signs that the opposition leaders are no longer in control of the anti-government elements. Protesters used the opportunity of the presence of large crowds gathered to celebrate Ashura and unleashed a wave of violent clashes with security forces Sunday resulting in at least eight deaths. According to eyewitness reports, banks, bus stops, cabbage containers, and cars were set on fire during the protests. Chants of slogans against government officials and some religious leaders were heard in Tehran.
Police say deadly force was not used to disperse the protesters, adding that the deaths are under investigation. Confirming the violent nature of the recent clashes, it was reported that dozens of security forces, including Tehran's police chief Commander Azizollah Rajabzadeh, have been injured. There was one unconfirmed report that one security officer at least was killed, too.
The images and reports about the recent developments suggest that opposition leaders are no longer in control of the protesters. Most telling is the fact that these crowds are now chanting slogans against the institutions and the icons of the Islamic revolution, supposedly a redline that none of the main opposition leaders wanted to cross.

Naw, we would never burn cabbage containers.
The burning cars are used as blocades against the Basij and supression forces. I read that one person was advocating using them as moving bombs by stting them on fire, and then putting them in gear, and rammimg them into Hardliner forces.
No doubt adding extra bottles of gas in the back seat first.
I imagine a burning car would make a very effective blockade. They burn hot, are heavy (so you can’t just push them out of the way), and produce a lot of very nasty smoke. All of which is good for confusing an enemy. Especially if you are on foot and they are in vehicles. Just brew up a few old cars and you level the playing field. A pile of tires works even better, but you won’t be able to find a few hundred tires as easily as you can a few old cars.
I’ve a suspicion that “cabbage” is a lost-in-translation reference to garbage.

No doubt they meant to say garbage containers.
It’s interesting that these stories about the Iranian government being on the verge of overthrow tend to be published immediately after new information about Iran’s nuclear weapons buildup is published.
IMO, let’s stop worrying so much about the price of oil. Invade, occupy and denazify Iran, or we’ll suffer the consequences of anti-defense policies in the near future.
