Romney: "I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country." (FLASHBACK 10/26/1994)
The Boston Globe | 1994-10-26

(snip)

On abortion and religion

ROMNEY: I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a US Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it. . . . I think the low point of this race was when my opponent and their family decided to make religion an issue in this campaign. Brought it out, attacked me for it. I think that's a mistake. I think the time has passed for that.

Didn’t he reverse his position on abortion.

Didn’t he reverse his position on abortion.

Several times, IIRC.

Romney’s on again-off again position on abortion and his role regarding Health Care in Massachusetts: two of the reasons that I would NEVER vote for this man.

In 1967, then-California Gov. Ronald Reagan signed a liberal abortion law legalizing the procedure in cases where a woman’s mental as well as physical health was at risk.

The number of abortions in California soared after the bill was passed, and Reagan came to regret singing it, the LA Times reported. By the time he ran for president in 1980, Reagan had declared his support for a constitutional amendment prohibiting all abortions except to save the life of a woman.

During the 1980 campaign, Reagan’s GOP primary opponent, George H.W. Bush, opposed a constitutional amendment restricting abortion. But by the time he ran for president in 1988, then-Vice President Bush said he opposed all abortions unless the mother’s life was endangered.

Romney will say whatever it takes to get elected. I don't believe he has one sincere bone in his whole body.

Hey, Mitt! Don’t waste your time and money running for POTUS, because you will not get the nomination; and, even in the unlikely event you would, you’d have no chance of defeating ObaMugabe (why would enyone vote for you when they can have the real deal — i.e., a confirmed leftist —in ObaMugabe?).

I think someone can have a genuine change of heart on this issue. Recall Gov. Ronald Reagan signed the most liberal abortion law in California’s history. Not that I am a Romney fan or a supporter—I have no idea of who I am going to support in 2012 as most of my energy and focus is on 2010.

Just a thought: do you think - perhaps - that the Romney-bashing is getting a teensy little bit overdone on FR?

Look: we get it, we really do. The man's got more baggage than Southwest Airlines, okay? His health care plan in Massachusetts is an unfolding disaster and his liberal social stances are not going to win him the support of GOP conservatives, ever. But the more attention we pay to him, the less we are spending on the Democrats who are truly positioned to do lasting damage to the Republic.

Do you see any Republicans in this picture? Cause I don't.

In 1971 Ted Kennedy wrote “While the deep concern of a woman bearing an unwanted child merits consideration and sympathy, it is my personal feeling that the legalization of abortion on demand is not in accordance with the value which our civilization places on human life. Wanted or unwanted, I believe that human life, even at its earliest stages, has certain rights which must be recognized—the right to be born, the right to love, the right to grow old.”

He later changed his mind.

I try to believe that politicians’ position on abortion reflect their beliefs. However I suspect for many (most ?) they articulate positions for their electoral impact.

Ahhh, what he has said is that he has always been prolife. He is a liar. People do and have changed their minds. If MR said I change my position and here is why (like Regan and Bush) it would be very different.

I am only destructive to RINOs, statists, liberals, and their apologists.

Of course they are all Democrats: it's Massachusetts. But what you can't see is what they are thinking:

I would agree. It’s to bad there are so many on FR who support him as the only conservative choice. Which of course he is not in anyway shape or form.
