INDIANAPOLIS (December 30, 2009) - 2009 traffic fatalities in Indiana are on pace to be the lowest recorded since 1925. Preliminary statistics through December 28 show 680 highway fatalities, compared to 814 for the same period in 2008, according to Indiana State Police (ISP). That is a more than 16 percent reduction.

Since 2004, when there were 947 fatalities, there has been a 28 percent drop in roadway deaths. 2009 will be the first year in which ISP issued more than one million traffic arrests and written warnings. ..................

Amazingly, at the height of the Obama Depression Indiana's highway death toll has DROPPED to about where it was in 1925 with 1/8th as many cars on the road as today.

Just guessing this is pretty much the case around the country ~ and Mitch Daniels, the Governor, may actually attempt to become a Presidential candidate in 2012 ~ might not be much ~ "death toll drops" ~ but he'd be running against the guy who brought back AlQaida "skyjacking", "butt bombs", terrorists to Illinois, etc.

Sounds like enforcement (and ticket revenue) is way up (and medical procedures are also improved).

Vacationers are way down because people don’t have the money to drive their cars.

I like Mitch, but these traffic fatalities dropping is going to be attributed to “increased road patrols” for which we get federal funding. These roadblocks for “seat belt enforcement” should be entirely illegal, but Indiana does it anyway. They call these safety patrols but the are nothing more than fishing for some slight thing to search and arrest you.

My Man Mitch will get my vote if he decides to run. Our local precinct chairman was just up in Indy meeting with a group of people who are strongly pushing for him to run.

Still sounds like the cops are catching the right guys though. Otherwise you wouldn't have seen a drop in fatalities.

That's DEAD PEOPLE ~ There are fewer of them this year than last, and for most of the last century!

WWII saw 30 MPH nationwide speedlimits too ~ and the Great Depression certainly inhibited travel.

I think it's great myself.

Its a domino effect, states with money problems will send out officers with orders to be more stringent on collecting speeding fines and such.

California could slowly ease its way back into the black by being a lot more strict on enforcing and collecting fines for people texting while driving. Make it a top priority.

Texting while driving high ~ definitely a major cash cow to be tapped.

Former Indiana boy here. Was there when the 55 was put in.

The same thing happened in ‘74, and the 55 mph speed limit was credited. However, this always happens in hard economic times.

Hard economic times kill the most lethal types of travel — joyriding, cruisin, etc. And, people tend to baby their vehicles more, cause of the costs of fuel and repairs.

Oh, and increased patrols tend to make people drive safer, if nothing else ‘cause they pay attention looking for cops.

The tickets themselves don’t do anything more than raise revenue.

My theory is, we are so broke that we aren’t driving anywhere.

Close. It was 35 mph. Took forever to get anywhere.

But you got 3 gallons of gasoline a week on an "A" card. Couldn't get tires, just recaps.

"Is this trip necessary?" was one motto repeated a lot, along with "Keep 'em Flying" and "Loose Lips Sink Ships".
