President Obama puts the Postal Service in charge of dispensing bio-terror drugs

WASHINGTON - If the nation ever faces a large-scale attack by a biological weapon like anthrax, the U.S. Postal Service will be in charge of delivering whatever drugs and other medical aid Americans would need to survive.

In an executive order released Wednesday, President Barack Obama put the Postal Service in charge of dispensing "medical countermeasures" to biological weapons because of its "capacity for rapid residential delivery."

While most likely unrelated, the release of the executive order comes less than a week after a man with alleged ties to al-Qaida tried to bring down a Detroit-bound U.S. airliner. In recent days, Obama has sought to assure the public that his administration is doing what it can to protect the nation from terrorist attacks.

Under the new order, federal agencies must develop a response plan that includes possible law enforcement escorts for Postal Service workers and gives anthrax "primary threat consideration."

OFFICIAL NEWS BULLETIN:

USPS who delivers letters laced with biological anthrax now given exclusive top security clerance and will be in charge of delivering the medical aid to thwart it. Disclaimer: The government can not be held responsible for the order in which they are delivered.

I'm beyond speechless!

But seriously, what is up with this executive order? Why this? Why now? More inefficiencies in central planning?

Why not - after all, the IRS is going to be in charge of healthcare. This way, healthcare will be denied by the tax agency, and lifesaving drugs won’t be delivered by the USPS. Both agencies have been practicing these roles for years - they’re already experts.

My experience is EXACTLY the opposite. USPS is worthless.

What makes you or anyone think that a postal worker is going to willingly go out and about with a bioterror attack in effect OR pending OR possibly pending?

The post office does not deliver mail to every residence, whereas UPS and Fedex do.

Say what?

Is that what you call Fed Ex and UPS backing up to the Post Office dock with a semi-truck to UNload? The Post Office delivers to every occupied house that has a box, that isn't on hold, or doesn't have nasty animals. I don't know what color the sky is on your world.

They do a damn good job of putting package pick up cards in my mailbox...INSTEAD OF WALKING UP TO MY FRONT DOOR AND RINGING MY BELL!!!!!!!!

Lazy isn’t even close to what most of them are.

ONE DAY in my shoes. That will be all you need to apologize profusely for painting with such a broad brush. 17 miles of walking in the snow and ice yesterday.

I fully agree that there are some outstanding people working for the USPS. Delivery routes can be challenging and most route carriers earn their pay.

That said, there are also a lot of losers at the USPS. Several times I've received calls from my carrier asking me to drive to the post office to pick up heavy boxes she doesn't want to handle.

The message here is not to paint with too broad a brush.

Why insult me?

I don't know where you live but in my area the post office has NEVER delivered mail. People have to drive to the post office to get their mail. I could put up 20 mail boxes in front of my house and the post office will still not deliver.

I suggest you do some research because you are showing your ignorance.

Thanks for the explanation.

I'll have to go to the P.O. and find out how they're going to deal with this here. They would have to hire someone to do deliveries.

OTOH, maybe this is geared towards big towns only.

I expect my small town rural experience may be a vastly superior to more urban areas.

My carrier is super hero as far as I’m concerned.

I said “most of them” not all of them. My experience with the USPS in Florida for the majority of my life is they “mostly” suck. No personal offense to you.

EXACTLY. My postwoman has been doing my mail for 7 years. SEVEN YEARS. To this very day she does this with the signature cards. I report her every single time she does it in hopes that I see someone new doing my mail. Usually the superiors back at the P.O. are pissed that she is doing this still. Certified mail..anything...I have to drive 9 miles and stand in line to pick something up I could have just gotten at my front door had she bothered to get out of her mail truck and walk up to the door.

One day years ago she was complaining about her pay...$18.25 an hour. I laughed really hard and asked “How much do you think you should be getting paid?”, she said “At least $25.00 an hour...for the crap I have to put up with.”

Stunning.

According to the local conservative talk host, the *average* pay for USPS employees is $83,000.
