For Obama, no ordinary vacation

KAILUA, Hawaii -- Before heading to a Wednesday luau, President Barack Obama did something much more somber, his aides said: he called CIA director Leon Panetta to discuss the deaths of seven agency officers in a suicide attack in Afghanistan.

On Thursday morning, before taking his family to a private viewing of the movie "Avatar 3-D," Obama called his counterterrorism and homeland security advisers for updates on an attempted airline attack a week earlier.

And on New Year's Eve, after more than five hours of golf, the president "cleared the decks" for work, aides said -- sequestering himself for several hours to study some preliminary assessments of intelligence failures in the airline case.

After an early wave of criticism for the president's decision to decline comment for three full days on the attempted Christmas attack, his advisers spent the rest of the trip pursuing two competing goals: shielding the president from further scrutiny so he could enjoy his time off while proving that he was fully engaged in national affairs.

Everyone of these “Cover for the boy-king” stories this week never fail to mention he was in the vicinity of his birth hospital. Thou protesteth too much?

Let’s be honest. Has Obama ever NOT been on vacation since he entered the White House? It’s all been gyms, golf, parties, and travel to exotic foreign parts, where he is usually too tired to meet with heads of state unless they are people he can bow to.

At a guess, he spends no more than an hour or two a day on actual work—listening to his aides and agreeing to whatever they advise. Six months in office before he could be bothered to meet with the man in charge of the Afghan war—the war he earlier said was crucial to his plans. And when he did finally meet him, it was only to chew him out for going public with embarrassing revelations.

Even Porkulus and Obamacare have been left entirely to Nancy and Harry and the Backroom Boyz. Obama has gone out on the campaign circuit, but that’s about the only work he does. Maybe a hard weekend’s work, appearing on four or five TV talk shows, or a tour of the White House with Michelle and the kids and some slobbering reporter.

Wait, what? And this is the same press corps that hounded W for being in Crawford during the August recess? At least he worked at the Texan White House, and didn’t carry on like a user kid with a free pass to Six Flags. They’ve fallen mysteriously silent.

They don’t care. The Democrats don’t care, and Obama certainly doesn’t care ... not about the United States, its citizenry, the Constitution or the rule of law. It’s the Chicago way.
