One of America's top military leaders says Yemen-based terrorists helped plan the Christmas Day, December 25, plot to blow up a U.S. bound airplane.
General David Petraeus told reporters in Baghdad Friday that the U.S. and Yemen have been sharing information about al-Qaida in the country, including activity that "resulted in the failed attack on the airliner."
The head of the U.S. Central Command said Yemen has carried out "very significant" operations against al-Qaida, some of which prevented a series of suicide bombings.
General Petraeus said the United States is helping Yemen, but that its neighbors have also provided significant assistance.
Earlier this week, a group known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula claimed responsibility for the attempted bombing of a flight from Amsterdam to the U.S. city of Detroit, saying it was in retaliation for U.S. support of operations against al-Qaida militants in Yemen.
The suspect in the case, 23-year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, has told U.S. investigators he got training and explosives in Yemen.
Yemen has been intensifying its campaign against rebels and suspected al-Qaida terrorists, conducting a series of airstrikes and other raids that it says resulted in militant deaths and arrests.
On Wednesday, Yemeni forces clashed with al-Qaida militants in Yemen's western Hudaydah province, wounding several suspected militants and capturing at least one.
A spokesman for Yemen's ruling party, Tarek al-Shami, said the government will continue to coordinate with the U.S. to target al-Qaida throughout Yemen.
Yemen is the ancestral home of al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden.

Petreaus speaking out certainly does make the WH look more and more incompetent....Like where is the CIC? Is he spending any time reading the briefs?...or just chosing his irons for the next day? OTOH he doesn’t know what real work is, he’s gotten by with just being present and still drew the check......just like many union workers.
Is Rahm stepping down?
General Petreaus has done this for a reason. For a very serious reason.
Starwise just posted on another thread that Bret Baer had said on FOX tonight Rahm would be stepping down to run for Senate from Illinois and Little Tommy would be taking his place.....FOX had spread rumors for a couple of weeks now that he was going to be replaced.....
I imagine they are planning on him taking Dirty’s place when he is removed from head of the party in the Senate. After all it wasn’t Harry that made the deals but the WH and Rahm & Co/CHicago Thugs.

FOX has been saying Rahm is stepping down since before CHristmas...mention on Beck and O’Really IIRC.
The the leaks started from others. Some to throw doubt on the CIA others to throw it back....
IMO Pet is just letting them know HE KNOWS who knew what when....and they'd better get their act together...or he WILL testify to what he knows.
You have to remember that our General and “our” military guys (not Weasley Clark and Obama’s lackeys) are wholly against closing GITMO and repatriating the detainees back to their countries of origin (read Yemen and his plans to send another 80 back to Yemen).
This Christmas bombing that almost took place was entirely preventable, and almost everyone knows that much now.
I think General Petraeus is making certain that Obama and the news media here are fully aware of the Yemen and US cooperation and that the cooperation was in effect before and during the plotting of the Christmas Day event.
Call it a shot across the bow or a reaffirmation of the other leaks. It is what it is and I’m sure he has more to say, if he’s asked.
