The NFL flaps its gums to appease Colts fans forced to watch their team tank last week's game against the Jets, blowing their perfect season.
MIAMI (AP) -- Commissioner Roger Goodell says the NFL competition committee will review league policy regarding late-season games where teams might be tempted to rest their starters for the playoffs.
Goodell said the league was sensitive to criticism in the wake of the Indianapolis Colts' decision to use backups a week ago in a game they lost, ending their bid for a perfect season.
''It is something we'll look at,'' Goodell said Sunday. ''We heard the fans loud and clear. It's something our competition committee has looked at in the past, but we're going to ask our competition committee to look at it again in the future. We want every game to be competitive.''

How about a new headline: NFL To Investigate Bengals For Sucking Against Jets.
As a Bengals fan I don't have much hope if they play similarly to tonight.
I agree! The Pro Bowl is a farse - love your “30-min touch football game” idea.
The NFL is strictly about money. That's why there was a game played Christmas night on the NFL Channel. If Goodell had his way, every game would be on the NFL Channel and we'd be paying $20 per game (with commercials).
The big reason they’re throwing a fit is because the Colts wussed out on a chance at an undefeated season and gave the Jets a back door into the playoffs. It gave them a double dose of bad publicity. The Saints game wasn’t a big deal because the Panthers weren’t in it and the Saints weren’t going for an undefeated season. Dittos for the Cards against the Pack.
I think the players wanted to try for a perfect season, but as it turned out, the field and weather in Buffalo today was so awful, their perfect season would have likely ended regardless. I mean, it would have been senseless to play the first string today and they didn't.
Waddya know, both the Colts and the Bengals tanked against the Jets, and the Jets, from the biggest media market in the US, made the playoffs.
Who is pissed about the current situation is not only fans of the good teams that decided to rest their starters, but fans of teams that didn’t make the playoffs, but would’ve made it had the better team played their starters. Mostly Steelers fans, I’d think.
The Jets got gifts two weeks in a row. It’s not like the Bengals put up a fight today either. What an easy way to close the season.
The way I see it, if the team earns themselves the opportunity to rest their players, then they should be entitled to it.
And if any teams are cheated because of it, too darn bad, win more games earlier in the season.
All I have to say to the Steelers, is "Next time, beat Cleveland."
That's right. There's "the game" and then there's the "meta-game": the strategic decisions and actions that teams make and take about the upcoming game before the players even step onto the field.
Call off the investigation after tonight’s game.
Like Wes Welker, done for the season, along with the Pats' Super Bowl hopes.
I was at the game today and we (Texans fans) were sorry to see that. We never really did figure out how he wnet down...it's a shame, though.
They certainly tried, but the Jets' defense is nasty. Carson Palmer 1/10 for ZERO yards. That must be a first.
People got real carried away bashing the Jets after the Colts debacle. But they are a very dangerous team. #1 rushing team in NFL. #1 defense. First team in history to make playoffs when a rookie QB threw 20+ INTs.
I really hope the Jets meet the Colts again in the playoffs.
14 week season, exactly what I was thinking. All of these records are false since the 16 game season. Jim Brown played a 12 game season, if he would have played 16 he would have nearly 2500 yards rushing record for a season.....It would be as if they increased MLB season from 162 to 216, the NBA season from 82 to 110. All this stretching out of the season waters down the quality of the games, just as too many teams waters down the quality of play.
The seeding based on the last 4 games would make the first 12 practically meaningless. Teams would just dog it earlier in the season, then turn it on late....
Enough Jets bashing. This Jets team destroyed the Texans, blanked the Raiders 36-0, beat New England and Carolina. Their huge blow was losing the multi-tooled Leon Washington in the first half of the Raiders game. They careened after that. But even w/o him they are the #1 rushing team in the NFL. You can't tell me the Bengals rolled over for them on national TV after the weeklong trash-talking. They just aren't that good, and will go down next week as well.
And, as it turns out, the Colts tanking their game gave the last playoff berth to the Jets instead of their division rival Houston Texans. Let’s see if that comes back to bite them next year.
