Obama Appoints Transgender Federal Bureaucrat (Takes diversity to the next level)
Village Voice ^ | 01/04/2010 | Roy Edroso in Featured, LGBTQ, Politics

There is much excitement over President Obama's appointment of a transgender woman, Amanda Simpson, as Senior Technical Advisor to the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security. Simpson was previously a deputy director at Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson and a Democratic candidate for the House of Representatives from Arizona.

She also has degrees in physics, engineering and business administration, and is a licensed flight instructor.

Simpson portrays herself as "one of the first transgender presidential appointees to the federal government," though we don't know of any others. (Alan Colmes says she's "Likely The First Presidential Transgendered Appointee.")

Tranifesto's Matt Kelley quibbles a bit: "I personally would have referred to her as a transsexual woman -- but it's not my place to impose an adjective or an identity onto anyone." New York Post commenters are predictably enraged ("guess a pedophile is next to get the special billing" "AMERICA IS DOOMED!!" etc), but what did you expect.

Something’s wrong with this president! What straight man do you know who befriends radical homosexuals, Ken Jennings, and this transgender specimen?

More here :

http://www.therightperspective.org/2010/01/01/obama-makes-first-transgender-appointment/

Barack Obama has chosen Amanda Simpson as a Senior Technical Advisor to the Department of Commerce, marking the first transgender appointment in an American presidential administration.

Simpson has more than 30 years of experience in the aerospace and defense industry, most recently serving as Deputy Director in Advanced Technology Development at Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, Arizona. While working at Raytheon, she transitioned from male-to-female over a six-year period, and successfully lobbied to add gender identity to Raytheon’s Equal Employment Opportunity Policy.

Simpson also holds degrees in physics, engineering and business administration along with an extensive flight background. She is a certified flight instructor and test pilot with 20 years of experience.

She has also been very active politically, having served on the Board of Directors of two national organizations: Out & Equal and NCTE. In Arizona, she has been on the board of Wingspan, the Southern Arizona Gender Alliance, the Southern Arizona ACLU and the Arizona Human Rights Fund (now Equality Arizona). She also ran an unsuccessful congressional bid in Arizona back in 2005.

The appointment makes good on a promise made by White House Office of Public Engagement (aka the LGBT liaison) Brian Bond, who stated an LGBT would have a visible role in the Obama Administration.

“I’m truly honored to have received this appointment and am eager and excited about this opportunity that is before me,” Simpson said in a press statement. “And at the same time, as one of the first transgender presidential appointees to the federal government, I hope that I will soon be one of hundreds, and that this appointment opens future opportunities for many others.”

Simpson will be working in the Bureau of Industry and Security.

Will Obama really take diversity to the next level and appoint a conservative, Constitution focused judge for the next SCOTUS vacancy?

Just finished listening to “Silencing of God” and at the end the speaker cites that throughout history God has punished those who turn from Him. We are on that path and the Anti-Christ is leading us there. Never assume that the Kenyan Klod doesn’t have intent whenever he does any of this and he mocks us while he does it. Satan has one of his own in the WH and his name is Obama

He nominated this guy solely because he’s a transvestite, it’s his way of throwing a bone to the GLBT supporters showing how “progressive” he is.

When I was an undergrad in Electrical Engineering, one of our courses was the design of VLSI ( Very Large Scale Integrated Circuits ). The co-author of one of the definitive books on chip design entitled Introduction to VLSI Systems, a groundbreaking work that would soon become a standard textbook in chip design, used in over 100 universities, was Lynn Conway.

Who was Lynn Conway you might ask ?

She was notable for several technical achievements, including the Mead & Conway revolution in VLSI design, which incubated an emerging electronic design automation industry. She worked at IBM in the 1960s and is credited with the invention of generalised dynamic instruction handling, a key advance used in out-of-order execution, used by most modern computer processors to improve performance.

Born and raised as a boy, Conway grew up in White Plains, New York. Although shy and experiencing gender dysphoria as a child, she became fascinated and engaged by astronomy (building a 6 inch reflector telescope one summer) and did well in math and science in high school. Conway entered MIT in 1955, earning high grades there. She attempted a gender transition in 1957-8, but this effort failed due to the medical climate at the time, and Conway left MIT in despair. After working as an electronics technician for several years, Conway resumed her education at Columbia University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, earning her B.S. and M.S.E.E. degrees in 1962 and 1963.

After learning of the pioneering research of Dr. Harry Benjamin in transgender treatment and realizing that a full gender transition was now possible, Conway sought his help and became his patient. After suffering from severe depression over her situation, Conway contacted Dr. Benjamin, who agreed to counsel her and prescribe hormones. Under Dr. Benjamin’s care, she began preparing for transition.

While struggling with life in a male role, Conway had been married to a woman and had two children. Under the legal constraints of the day, she was denied access to their children when she transitioned.

Although she hoped to be allowed to transition on the job, IBM fired Conway in 1968 after she revealed to them that she was transsexual, and was planning on transitioning to a female gender role.

On completing her transition in 1968, Conway took a new name and identity, and restarted her career in “stealth-mode” as a contract programmer at Computer Applications, Inc. She went on to work at Memorex during 1969–1972 as a digital system designer and computer architect.

Conway joined Xerox PARC in 1973, where she led the “LSI Systems”. Collaborating with Carver Mead of Caltech on VLSI design methodology, she co-authored Introduction to VLSI Systems, a groundbreaking work that would soon become a standard textbook in chip design, used in over 100 universities by 1983. The book and early courses were the beginning of the Mead & Conway revolution in VLSI system design.

Thought I’d share this interesting tidbit with everyone here.

Great.
We already have an administration filled with bureaucrats confused
about policy...
now we’ve got one confused/conflicted about gender.

(Although I will say this appointee appears to actually have decent
academic credentials...)

RE: What was Amanda’s first name ten years ago ?

Interestingly, I haven’t found that info while doing a Google search. In fact, not even Wikipedia ( which has an entry on her/him ) provided that information.

I just found out that Simpson was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Representative of District 26 in the Arizona House of Representatives in 2004.

Is ‘Amanda’ (as in: she’s a man...duh!) qualified for the job? Or does being a tranny make her qualified?
