In new book, Michael Steele says the GOP should acknowledge where "we most glaringly compromised our principles" in the past decade and hold its elected officials accountable.
WASHINGTON -- Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele offers a simple explanation for why the GOP may have lost touch with some Americans since the Ronald Reagan era: "We screwed up," he claims in a new book offering a blueprint for the party's resurgence.
That "we" includes the last two Republican presidents and the most recent Republican candidate for president.

DUH.
A little late. Steele was also drinking the cool-aid.
I didn’t know that writing a book was part of Steele’s job description.
IMHO Michael Steele is one of the screwups.
Ken Blackwell would have been a better representative for our party.
Now for the correction.....
NO MORE RINOs AND ‘RAT RETREADS!
The only writing Steele should do is his resignation letter.
I’d be interested to know just how much of his time has been focused on work other than his personally paid speeches and this book.
Steele is right; Bush, Jr.’s wild spending (and his father’s nonchalant disregard of his “Read My Lips” pledge) came close to ruining the Republican Party as it came to be widely associated with standing for not much different from the Demos - only in magnitude of expense and a slower road to socialism.
It wasn’t really after Reagan that the GOP screwed up, it was after Clinton that they screwed up. They did fine after taking over Congress in 1995..
It was after a Bush came in that things went bad for the GOP Congress. Bush was a spender, and Congress accommodated him.
Bush did a lot of good, but he was definitely a spender.
Yes a good choice but I'll raise you a Laura Ingraham...
IMHO she is the one to be the voice and face of the RNC.
Was in the Judicary under Reagan.
She is a supply sider, pro-life.
She is easy on the eyes, has media savvy, and could reach out to women, an audience far bigger than other groups we and others are reaching out too.
The Republicans also screwed up by going “me, too” on filling quotas.
Do not contribute to the screw up GOP. Support your candidate directly, where you now it will do more good.
Go Sarah.
How about supporting Specter over his Republican rival in the senate primary?
How is supporting Crist in Florida going?
How many years lost?
You can say that again.Steele is a rino and part of the problem.Blackwell by far would have been the best man for the job.
He expects us to think that all the ex-Democrats and “moderate” establishment Republicans they have recruited for Congressional seats really believe what he wrote in that book.
The difference between Republicans and Democrats is the difference between “Slocialists” and “Socialists.”
The only bright spot was in 1994 when Newt Gingrich and co. exploited Billy Boy's failings to gain a temporary majority. These gains were quickly squandered.
We need a Lee Atwater or a Haley Barbour more than we need this 1 step forward and two steps back mediocrolite.
