Steele calls for Nap sack — cites phantom GOP “leadership”

RNC Chairman Michael Steele was just on Neil Cavuto’s FOX show calling for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to step down — saying he agrees with “Republican leadership” on the need for a new DHS boss.

One slight problem:

Not a single member of the GOP “leadership” — except Steele — has called for her resignation in the wake of the failed Christmas bombing — leaving Steele out on the limb with the only prominent member of his party to make the call, Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.).

Transcript, with video link to TVEyes:

CAVUTO: Janet Napolitano is getting a lot of heat for minimizing this problem and maybe botching this whole situation. Should she leave?

CHAIRMAN STEELE: I agree with the Republican leadership that called for her resignation, yes. I think the risks are too high and the experience required to do this job is too great. And I think on both fronts she’s fallen short.

Actual House “leadership” staffers on and off the hill were none to thrilled with Steele’s latest gaffe, with aides saying it undercuts their credibility in questioning the administration’s response to the attack. And they’re particularly upset that Steele made the mistake while promoting his book.

I saw him on Cavuto today too. Did you hear him say, that if he wasn’t the GOP chairman he would be a Tea Party participant? The only thing he said that made sense was that Neopolitan fell far short of doing her job and being qualified for it.
