DUBAI // A British educational-aid specialist was jailed yesterday for three months for sexually assaulting an on-duty policeman at Jumeirah Public Beach.

The defendant, SH, was convicted of exposing himself and inappropriately groping the policeman early on the morning of October 10 after the Briton finished swimming.

The judge at the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance ordered he be deported following his jail term.

The 38-year-old Briton had pleaded not guilty at a hearing on December 6.

He was initially charged with public indecency, but this was later elevated to sexual assault.

The policeman told prosecutors that SH revealed his genitals at the beach and inappropriately groped him at 3am on a Saturday.

The 27-year-old officer from the police’s Ports Station told prosecutors he had been on duty at the public beach. The defendant swam towards him while he was patrolling, and asked him about his nationality.

“I told him ‘I am from Dubai’ when he asked me but then he came out and touched my private parts,” said the policeman, who then pushed away the man and attempted to reveal his police identification.

The Briton was taken to the Dubai Ports police station and charged. According to the indictment sheet, the defendant admitted guilt to prosecutors.

Recently, the Dubai Police revealed that 6,385 offences were recorded in 2009 on Dubai’s beaches. These ranged from indecent exposure to sexual assaults.

In 2008, a British man and woman made headlines around the world when they were convicted of having sex on a beach in Dubai. Their case and other examples of lewd beach behaviour prompted the police to increase security patrols and floodlighting on the emirate’s shoreline.

That is almost as dumb as trying to smuggle drugs to Singapore or China ...almost. What the heck was that man thinking? Only Western nations tolerate cr@p.

Although, naturally I suppose, the story does not relate it, I sense that the “policeman” here was not in uniform. I should like to think that the defendant had more sense that that, but we have all been disappointed before. mdc

You get the death penalty for smuggling drugs into Singapore?

Now, why would a homosexual foreigner in Dubai, emerging from the surf in the nude, automatically assume that another male on that particular beach, in the dark at three o’clock in the morning, would welcome his advances?

Sounds like Dubai has a problem with homosexuals committing lewd acts in public, to the point of having undercover police stings to put a stop to it, when you read between the lines.

Bring more than 15 grams of drugs into Singapore and it is the death penalty for you. Automatic! Mandatory! No regard for the circumstances that brought that about (e.g. when they say do not leave your luggage unattended, doing so may actually carry real bite if some person slips something into your bag while you're unattentive, and you're busted)!

The local variation of the death penalty is hanging.

There are a number of nations, many in Asia, that carry some automatic and mandatory sentences. I travel a lot on business (Fund Manager Frontier & Emerging markets, though not in Asia ...but in the Middle East and Africa I do travel), and I check my luggage (always carry on, even if it means buying some clothes when I arrive) several times just in case. In the US that would be paranoia, in some places (particularly the M.East) it is pure unadulterated common sense.

In Singapore even throwing chewing gum on the (immaculately clean) streets WILL bring Johnny Law on you hard and fast.

The people in the article were stupid! In the same way I would be dumb if you were kind enough to have me come over to your house, and I break a rule (e.g. say I start kicking your dog, or sweet talking a female relative of yours). I may not agree with your rules, but if I am in your house (and being a FReeper you are most probably a gun owner, and a Red Blooded human being who doesn't stand for sh!t), I HAVE to a) respect the rules in your home, or b) get the heck out of your house, or c) be introduced personally to your Remington!

Similar to what happens when wide-eyed TOURISTS end up in countries and act like they were in Tulsa/Manchester/Paris/Brisbane!
