Video of Sea Shepherd / Japanese ship collision
YouTube ^ | January 6th, 2010 | Unknown

Sea Shepherd announced yesterday that the Ady Gil, formerly known as the EarthRace, was struck by the Japanese fleet while it was dead in the water, slicing off the bow of the craft, and forcing the rescue of the six souls aboard. In fact, Captain Watson was quoted as saying that this event was captured on film, and will show the Japanese ship turned strongly and suddenly, attacking the small boat.

Well, it was, by the Japanese, and here's the video of the incident. If you watch the rear of the black boat at about the 0:15 mark, you'll see the wake start as the engines are thrown into gear, and the wake is quite strong at the rear as the craft strikes the side of the Japanese ship.

Note to Sea Shepherd - if you decide to ram a ship, you might want to do it with something just a wee bit stronger than a kevlar and carbon composite. My favorite moment comes at 0:33 where the water cannon bashes the now shipwrecked pirates, adding insult to their own self imposed injury.

>>was struck by the Japanese fleet while it was dead in the water<<

Hahaha! Like you said, it is very clear they were NOT dead in the water.

I don't know, I think you'd need an element of lethality to call it attempted murder, there was no way that ramming a carbon/kevlar hull into an ice-reinforced steel hull was going to do any significant damage. But I've not seen the Japanese ship's hull after being rammed - there could be damage and justification for the charge.

Wouldn't mind finding out what type of insurance Sea Shepherd took out on the Ady Gil, and if they've started the process of attempting to collect - insurance fraud doesn't seem like such a stretch for these pirates.

I’ve often wondered why there isn’t a law of the sea to prevent the disruption of business by these eco-terrorists?
Can’t the Japanese have a security force that captures these
people and tries them for a crime?

The black boat was sporting the Jolly Roger, and behaving with matching intent.
Piracy, and variations thereon, are real and lethal. Kudos for the whalers acting appropriately.

So if I had a firearm, and I shot the guy on the attacking boat, is that ok, and why didn't he guys on the little boat fire on the big boat.

I mean , it works on bullys in the schoolyard, I GD guarantee it would have saved them here!!

Excuse me? Seems clear enough that the Sea Shepherd was on a collision course with the Japanese boat.

Why would the Japanese release the video if that were not the case?

These guys should be thankful that they were rescued.

You mean the attack boat's attempt to lay a prop fouling cable to disable the Shonan Maru No 2 .

As a general rule, a more maneuverable vessel must make way for a less maneuverable one. It does appear the propellers on the Sea Urchin (whatever) suddenly came to life moments before she, the Sea Urchin, rammed the whaling vessel. The fact that the larger vessel was playing fire hoses clearly shows they intended to discourage the approach of smaller vessel.

Any admiralty court, in any jurisdiction, will throw them out on their ear.

Attempted murder? You mean how that retarded black pirate boat suddenly accelerated into the path of the larger craft?

You can see them power up and charge, trying to force a much larger vessel to alter it’s course. Illegal.

I would think that the Japanese have specifically refrained from taking any police actions against Sea Shepherd, and instead relied upon demanding the Australians do something about it, specifically to prevent Sea Shepherd from turning a justified trial into a three ring international circus.

The wake of the Japanese ship clearly shows that they were stirring away from the eco-pirates.

Piracy is what it is. Their motive matters not a bit. Attacking merchants is piracy. If we had an atty general, now, or under Bush, they would be charged,,, and their financial support here should be hit with RICO.
