Reprieve Eases Medical Crisis for Illegal Immigrants

ATLANTA — After a largely sleepless night, Cruz Constancia got up Tuesday morning wondering whether this would be the day that she finally stopped receiving dialysis without charge.

It was not. When Ms. Constancia, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, arrived at her dialysis clinic at 6 a.m., she was escorted promptly to her recliner. “I thanked God,” she said after concluding the three-hour session, “because he is really the only one that can allow us to continue our treatments.”

But caring for uninsured immigrants has imposed a heavy financial burden, particularly for public hospitals with broad missions to care for the indigent. At Grady, where thrice-weekly dialysis treatments cost about $50,000 a year, the outpatient clinic ran a deficit of $3.5 million in 2008. That was one-tenth of the hospital’s loss that year, although the clinic served only about 90 patients.

There are so many explicit statements in that sentence, and so many more implicit realities that define a major problem.

1. People, a society, may have a moral obigation to care for its indigent, but governments do not.
2. Self defined indigents come in two types, the physically helpless and mentally incompetent; and the willing incompetent who have no desire to waste their effort on self-preservation, but embark on a deliberate journey of self destruction. People are either free to make their own lives, or they're not; for better or for worse.
3. Citizens of a country may be willing and able to care for some indigents, or even all indigents in their country, but no country, not even the largest or most powerful, can take care if all of the world's indigents.
4. It is a well established liberal modern U.S. mantra that, if all residents (legal and illegal) cannot be protected and defended, none should be: e.g. Star Wars.

In view of the above (disagreements or refutations welcome) the continuing bleeding of the U.S. taxpayer dollars against their collective will is illegal, illogical, destructive and ultimately doomed to failure.

Our elected representatives seem to be intellectually unprepared to see the obvious.

End stage renal failure is as bad as the body can get before it dies. My wife sits through 6 treatments a week while I administer the procedure. The home training we received saves the hospital and the government money. It has taken a hefty toll on our retirement. The cost for machine rental and all the components, tubes, syringes, saline, gloves, masks and specialized fluids cost us about 10K each quarter. I will gladly pay what it takes to keep my wife with me. I am an American by birth and Texan by God.

The illegals in Memphis, TN and surrounding Mississippi and Arkansas use The Regional Medical Center for a doctors office. ER waits are extremely long.

The states of Mississippi and Arkansas whose Medicaid patients are seen at The Med are extremely slow at paying The Med for their Medicaid patients treatements/hospital stays.

The Med has the best neo-natal center and the best trauma center for a hundred or more miles surrounding Memphis.

The Med is about to go bankrupt for all the above reasons.

IF you work but have no health insurance and are a US Citizen you have to set up a payment plan to pay your bill....but IF you are an illegal you don't have to pay squat.
