WASHINGTON -- The retirements of two top Democratic senators underscore what many in the party had already conceded: The prognosis for Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections is looking bad.
In brief remarks Wednesday outside his home in East Haddam, Conn., Sen. Christopher Dodd confirmed he wouldn't seek re-election for a sixth term, bowing to political realities which see him trailing potential Republican opponents in a fall campaign.
Mr. Dodd said his decision wasn't based on any predictions about the November elections, although the senator also acknowledged he is in "the toughest political shape" of his career.
Mr. Dodd's decision is the latest in a string of big-name Democratic retirements revealed Tuesday as the party struggles to contend with a challenging political climate. Sen. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota said he, too, would retire after this year, unexpectedly saddling his fellow Democrats with a wide-open race that could be tough to win in a Republican-leaning state.
And Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter, viewed as a rising Democratic star after a 2006 election victory that laid the groundwork for a Democratic pickup there in the 2008 presidential race, announced Wednesday that he will bow out rather than seek re-election.
The retirements underscore how sharply the political climate has turned against the majority party, which looked almost impregnable after the 2008 elections. With major initiatives such as the stimulus and the health-care overhaul unpopular, Democrats are looking increasingly vulnerable in the states that formed the basis of their new majority, particular places such as Colorado and Virginia.
The defensive mood could hurt fund-raising and candidate recruitment and will likely force the White House to further scale back its ambitions.

Buh-bye. Don’t let the door hit you in the dodd on the way out.
Hope the door hits him on the arse on the way out.
lol
VIDEOS at link.
It is great to see Dodd dropping out and knowing that someone else will finally pick-up that CT seat.
We all need to do our parts to make sure BHO is a quacking lame duck by this time next year.
I actually think that this helps the Dems.
Dodd was a sure loser (in the election) so now they can run someone who might have a chance.
Who’s next???
i am actually sad to see him go
without him on the ballot the Dems will likely retain the seat
had he been on the ballot it would have been a GOP pickup
You beat me to it!
Another Toxic Ass et gone.
I would not celebrate too soon. Dodd will be replaced with someone else with his philosophy who they believe is electable.
With the Democrats, things are never as they seem. Never trust or believe a Democrat and always look for an ulterior motive in everything they do.
This news is greatly appreciated by the waitress’s of DC. Both sides of the sandwich are now gone - go ridence. I suppose he will now spend time with his family in their Irish Mansion.

If the Democrats ran against Bush in 2008, the Republicans in CT can run against Dodd in 2010.
It’s Richard Blumenthal up at bat. He’s another Schumer...loves the camera.
This is a man getting ready to get a million plus in retirement and make gazillions "consulting", "lobbying", etc., when he ought to be tried, incarcerated, and stripped of his retirement for dereliction of duty, graft, corruption, and other crimes against the country he was sworn to protect and make wise decisions for.
