I’m going to be contrarian on this: the notion among managerial types that they personally are indispensable to the functioning of their agency/department is usually an error. Those calling for Leiter’s firing are second-guessing his judgment that is subordinates were up to handling the matter in his absence. Is that judgment really the basis for preferring someone picked by Obama to a Bush hold-over, who might actually get that we’re in a war?
Of course, the New York Daily News may be obliquely criticizing Obama for staying on vacation, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
