I asked that very question at Reagan National once and was told that they are not installed there because they would impede people’s ability to get out if ever a “rapid emergency mass evacuation” were necessary. Being a fairly frequent user of that airport, I didn’t even want to think about the implications of that one.
So in an emergency they wouldn't have everyone evacuate through the larger entrance section? They'd make everyone cram through the small exit corridor off to the side?

Isn't that the most idiotic excuse you've ever heard? That's what fire exits should be for.
...............impede peoples ability to get out if ever a rapid emergency mass evacuation were necessary.

That makes no sense ,, you just have a regular (wide) doorway next to the turnstile that is alarmed if you need to evacuate..
