URGENT -- MAGNITUDE 6.5 QUAKE HITS WEST OF FERNDALE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
This is Breaking - just announced on Fox News
Nothing felt in Santa Cruz.
You beat Google News.
Looks like it’s 22 miles offshore
Appears to be on the edge of the Continental Shelf. I take it the San Andreas runs through there?
Hang in there, FRiend. Hope all is well. I rode through the big ones back in the early 90s there.
All quite (sic) in Scotts Valley.
I remember they got hit hard once before, I think in the ‘90s but could have been ‘80s.
Just had seen it on the earthquake site and was trying to see if a Tsunami warning is up!
Twitter is typically 3 to 5 minutes ahead of the wire services
Hey this was just off the coast where you are - any news?
small 3.2 in So. Cal...2 minutes after the 6.5
Far enough offshore (prelim location) based on the USGS shakemap that there really shouldn’t be much damage. not a really populated area anyway.
Of course, too small to generate a tsunami except for the very rare underwater landslide variety.
Appears to have a strike-slip mechanism, so this is part of the complex faulting around the Mendocino Triple Junction, not on the southern end of the Cascadia subduction zone, hence, unlikely to be a foreshock of a much larger subduction quake.
URGENT — TSUNAMI NOT EXPECTED AFTER A MAGNITUDE 6.5 QUAKE HIT WEST OF FERNDALE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
Could it be related to the quake in the Solomon Islands?
The SEA LIONS knew it was coming!
I was there.
It was intense.
GUess the Seals in SF Bay knew something was up after all. 4.1 in San Jose, and now a bigger shake up the coast.
6.5 is pretty large.
Let’s hope it is the quake - this time - and not a pre-courser to the “The Big One”
Probably more to come..God forbid
Looks pretty close there.
Thanks - now being reported on FNC
Local Police report at least minor damage
Cracks in a City Hall building being reported on Fox.
Then why did the seals apparently wind up in southern Oregon?
To: U.S. West Coast, Alaska, and British Columbia coastal regions
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center
Subject: Tsunami Information Statement issued 01/9/2010 at 4:32PM PST
At 4:28 PM Pacific Standard Time on January 9, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 6.4 occurred 15 miles/24 Km southwest of Eureka, California.
The magnitude is such that a tsunami IS NOT EXPECTED. However, in coastal areas of intense shaking, locally generated tsunamis can be triggered by underwater landslides. This will be the only WCATWC message issued for this event.
The location and magnitude are based on preliminary information. Further information will be issued by the United States Geological Survey or the appropriate regional seismic network.
Thanks for the info.
North Coast ping-
You up north in the area now- or still offshore?
It’s near the Mendocino “Triple Junction” - the border of three plates - Pacific, North American, and the small Gorda plate. The San Andreas at the Triple Junciton, somewhat south of this quake.
It’s an extremely seismic area.
Real close to TorkLand.
Earth to Tork Earth to Tork. Come in..
The whole Pacific looks rather busy along the shore lines.
I remember they had pretty gingerbread houses that went all to pieces or slid around.
Yes, the San Andreas run through CA then leaves the CA proper a little bit north of SFO, then crosses a small peninsula - where you can still see marks from the 1903 quake - then goes back to sea and north-northwest towards Alaska
That's why it pays to donate to FR! You'll get it here first.
Intense is not the word for the ‘89 quake. Where I am (a mile from the epicenter) it felt nuclear.
Nothing today, thankfully.
So far two after shocks first a 3.8 then a 3.5.
Arrgh - I can’t type anymore. The San Andreas ends at the Triple Junction. More info here:
everything is fine here in frozen south jersey.......
Lord, may this be the biggest one of this season, and may no harm come of it.
Pacific ring of fire?
Yep, we felt it here in Vegas. The one armed bandits started spilling silver dollars and I managed to grab me some before the security goons showed up and began filling their own pockets!
They said on Fox another small earthquake not a aftershock in Petrolia CA> Where is that?????
One of the best visual representations for Earthquakes I have found is this:
