xas sets winter power use record

The state's main grid operator says Texas set a new winter record for electricity use, hitting 55,856 megawatts between 7 and 8 a.m. today, beating the old record by almost 5,500 megawatts.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, said the region first beat the old record last night, between 7 and 8 p.m., when consumers used 52,001 MW. The previous record of 50,408 MW was set Feb. 16, 2007.

The record isn't exactly official as it's based on some data estimates that won't be finalized for several months.

"The ERCOT grid has not experienced any major operational issues during this severe weather event," said Vice President of System Planning and Operations Kent Saathoff. "We are expecting continued higher-than-average winter demand today, although not as high as this morning's load. We don't anticipate any problems meeting the demand, barring any unexpected major outages."

That's not to say all parts of the grid are impervious to cold. In Bandera County a 1960s-era power transmission line has come dangerously close to being overloaded during recent cold weather...

...back in the late 80s I bought a new tract house with a heat pump...it was really inefficient in cold weather...and expensive to run too...I never want to live like that again.

Tell me it isn't so! Bandera Electric just shoved the new "Smart" system down our throats. It was sold as being able to handle these overloading issues. (By controlling power usage from a central location). New power lines which were recently strung up along Bandera Road, FM471 and 1283 to bring power to the county.

I can see a new Board of Directors taking over soon.
