Polar bears near shore as ice vanishes (Study Shows 239% Increase In Polar Bears)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- A 27-year study of polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea showed them spending more time on land and open water as ice disappeared, officials said.

Between 1979 and 1987, 12 percent of bear sightings were associated with no ice. Between 1997 and 2005, however, 90 percent of bear sightings were associated with no ice, said Karyn Rode, a polar bear biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Anchorage, Alaska.

As sea ice disappeared, more bears were seen near shore in the southern Beaufort Sea, Rode said in a recent issue of the journal Arctic. Many scientists blame the warmer temperatures associated with climate change for the disappearance of the sea ice.

The number of bears sighted steadily near shore increased from 138 bears between 1979 and 1987, to 271 bears between 1988 and 1996, and 468 bears between 1997 and 2005, Rode said.

The bear observations and ice conditions were recorded as part of a bowhead whale survey conducted annually in the southern Beaufort Sea.

Keep in mind these people were not just on land. They surveyed land, sea, and ice. Their observations showed an increase from 138 bears(79-87) to 468 bears (97-05)...an INCREASE of 238%.

Ice vanishing? Lets look at a comparison between Jan 10,1979 and Jan 10, 2010:

The "Beaufort Sea" is located the upper left area of both satellite images. To find exactly where it is, using the image on the left, follow a straight line from the zero on the chart on the left...moving to the right until you hit the water/ice. Just above that point (above the small green island) you will see a red/pinkish blob showing less of a concentration of sea ice. On the image on the right (from Jan 10 2010) there is no pinkish spot on the Beaufort Sea. The ice concentration is purple meaning a thicker concentration of sea ice.

If their contention is that there is more summer time ice melting, then they should say so, but this idea that somehow the area has seen its ice vanish is pure BS.

Polar bears love to eat seals. Seals love to float around on broken sections of sea ice to keep away from polar bears. Extensive sea ice forces the bears to risk life and limb to go eat seals hiding in and on the ice. Less ice forces the seals onto land into the ready grasp of the bears.

Obviously a loss of sea ice over several seasons should result in more bear cubs surviving because their mommies will have easier seal hunting ~ ergo the growth of polar bear numbers does reflect the loss of sea ice.

Return of a lengthy period of heavy sea ice should deplete polar bear numbers.

The Algore had it bass ackwards.

Maybe it's the body heat from all those extra polar bears that is causing the ice to melt. LOL!

Time for the envirowackos to give it a rest.

More likely they took the facts and twisted them. A little cherry picking words and pics.

Jimbo, what’s the background to that pix? Interesting and hilarious, I think I can almost figure it out but would like to know for sure...

“According to the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado, Arctic summer sea ice has increased by 409,000 square miles, or 26 per cent, since 2007 – and even the most committed global warming activists do not dispute this.”

It’s all a LIE...er, actually, a SCAM!

So polar bears eat only seals?
And their food was only on distant ice floes?

But, but, this can’t be! EVERYONE knows that the decrease of ice means that the polar bear will DIE!!!!!

Yeah, what a bunch of BS. The polar bear data is from 2005. That’s five freakin’ years ago! These AGW alarmists are grasping at anything to keep the myth alive!

Cheers
