One of the other reasons for having a CCW that none of this breathless reporting mentions is that when you have a CCW in many states, you no longer need to pay the NCIC check fee when you transfer a firearm. If you do a lot of buying/selling of guns without a FFL, the CCW pays for itself typically in as little as five transactions.
The bottom line is people were afraid of what might happen, so they started stocking up.
