NRA backs expelled student's appeal

A teenager expelled from his Glenn County high school for having shotguns in his vehicle, which was parked off campus, will challenge his expulsion this week.

Gary Tudesko, 16, was expelled from Willows High School in November after a dog detected the guns in his pickup truck on Oct. 26, according to a news release by the National Rifle Association.

Tudesko told school officials he'd gone on an early morning duck-hunting trip before school that morning and believed the guns would not be a problem if he parked off campus.

Willows is a town of 6,000 surrounded by ranching areas and wetlands in the Sacramento Valley.

School officials claimed they had the legal authority to expel Tudesko. The teen and his family, with legal support from the NRA, are challenging the decision.

A hearing is scheduled before the Glenn County Board of Education in Willows at 10 a.m. Friday.

Hell we parked on campus with them in a gun rack in the back window! The school admin later made us lock the vehicles after someone had their shotgun stolen.

This has to be about the worst reportage on an issue such as this that I’ve seen in recent memory. Why was the dog near the vehicle? Why does the school think it has any sort of concern about what goes on away from the school property? Was there anything about the transport or storage that was in violation of local ordinance or state law?

If it was outside school property sounds like its misuse of public funds or an illegal search. At the very least its a school system out of control.

Meanwhile kids still graduate from high school without knowing how to read.

so this kid told a classmate he’d gone duck hunting, who ran to the principal, who called the police, who ran the kids name and got his license plate, who put a bolo out for the vehicle, who called in dogs when the vehicle was located off-campus, who went back to the principal, who expelled the student.

Well, the student should be severely chastized for stupidity for expecting guns in a truck to be safe, (especially in Willows, which has seen a marked rise in gang activity over the last decade) but, imo, the principal should have called the father to come get his kid’s guns and give him a stern lecture, instead of going drama queen.

The dogs were part of school security, local police, drug unit or ?

School security leaving a gun free zone unprotected? Heads should roll.

My guess is that some anti-hunter, anit-gun student, teacher or administrator who is also a control freak heard about the duck hunting and went looking for revenge.

Old story but a buddy and I duck hunted before school and on a couple of occasions went to school with mud on our hunting pants. Not something a 16 year old male who worries about his appearance 24/7 likes to do, but chasing cripples has to be done.

Talk about overreaching school authorities. Not on school grounds, none of their business.

I know growing up back in the 1970's and 1980's, the rules were is that you were under the school jurisdiction only on their property, at their functions and in the process of going to and from school. Anything outside of that is off limits.

Since my time with P.C. coming in and common sense going out the window, I am sure a lot of things has changed since then.

One thing I remembered in college was I looked over the university discipline code and there was a piece that said, "No student may violate any federal, state or local law on or off campus". This was a pretty broad brush ! I got a few speeding tickets when I was in college but luckily, I didn't have to appear before the J-board to explain myself on those charges :) I don't know if it still on the books today. After I graduated in 1989, they were starting to use the code to crackdown on students who get busted at off campus parties. It may have been used while I was in school. Don't know. This is from when I served as secretary of the fraternity house and one of my jobs was to pickup campus mail. One of the guys in our house got arrested for shoplifting (dumb) and within a week, there was a letter from VP of Student Affirs with his name on it. I never asked or anything. It was probably related to the shoplifting incident.

In the 60s the rifle club guys used to carry their rifles on the school bus. Never saw one jump up and bite anybody.
